Position Summary – Data Analyst / ETL Specialist (Upstream Oil & Gas)

Description Summary:
Focus on using ETL best practices and data analytics to solve business problems and enhance efficiency across IT systems. Responsibilities include collecting, cleaning, and interpreting data to extract insights that inform decision-making and process improvements. The role also involves developing data models and aligning architecture with business and technical goals.


Key Responsibilities 1. Data Collection and Management

  • Gather data from multiple internal and external sources (databases, systems, etc.)

  • Develop and maintain scalable data collection and storage systems

  • Ensure data accuracy, integrity, consistency, and quality

2. Data Analysis and Interpretation

  • Use statistical tools and techniques to analyze datasets

  • Identify trends, anomalies, correlations, and inconsistencies

  • Build predictive and analytical data models

3. Communication and Reporting

  • Create reports, dashboards, and data visualizations (e.g., Power BI)

  • Present insights and actionable recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Work directly with stakeholders to understand data needs and deliver solutions

4. Troubleshooting and Optimization

  • Investigate and resolve data/system issues

  • Optimize data pipelines and analytics workflows

  • Improve data quality and ensure low-maintenance, scalable solutions

5. Data Modeling and Architecture

  • Design and implement effective data models aligned with business goals

  • Contribute to the overall data architecture strategy

6. Data Integrity and Security

  • Help establish and maintain standards for data quality, security, and compliance

7. Data Strategy Development

  • Contribute to long-term data strategy planning

  • Ensure strategies are aligned with organizational objectives

8. Technology Monitoring

  • Stay current with trends and technologies in data analytics, ETL, and data infrastructure


Required Skills

  • Technical: Proficient in SQL, data modeling, database design, Power BI

  • Analytical: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities

  • Collaborative: Experienced in working with cross-functional teams (e.g., IT, engineering, finance)


Desirable Skills

  • Programming: Python (or other statistical languages), REST API development

  • Tools: Databricks, PI Data Historian, MS SQL Server, additional data visualization platforms

  • Processes: ETL development, data migration, data warehousing, modeling tools

  • Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with upstream oil & gas operations, especially:

  • Process Data

  • SCADA

  • Field Data Capture

  • Heavy oil production

  • Alberta and Saskatchewan air emissions regulations


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (preferred)


Work Conditions

  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours/week

  • Overtime: Subject to manager preapproval; T4 status applies

  • Travel: Not required
