Job summary

Magna Powertrain is seeking an Automation/Controls Engineer to support and advance Industry 4.0 initiatives across manufacturing equipment, lines, and test stands. You will work with PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and networking protocols to enable connectivity, data collection, and predictive maintenance.

Your role includes developing data extraction specifications, dashboards, and automation solutions, collaborating with Engineering, Maintenance, IT, and vendors to drive efficiency and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer Engineering, Industrial Automation, or related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in manufacturing, controls engineering, industrial automation, or Industrial IoT environments.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production equipment.
  • Experience in automotive Tier-1 or Tier-2 manufacturing environments preferred.
  • Experience supporting plant launches and automation projects is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Supports controls, connectivity, and data collection systems of manufacturing equipment, assembly lines, and test stands to enable Industry 4.0 initiatives.
  • Troubleshoots production equipment and automation systems, including PLCs, CNCs, robotics, sensors, and related infrastructure.
  • Develops machine connectivity solutions using DBXX standards, CBM architecture, OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, and industrial networking protocols.
  • Programs, configures, and supports PLCs, HMIs, industrial devices, and acquisition systems used in operations.
  • Develops specifications for data extraction, sensor integration, and system interfaces.
  • Designs and implements automation and Industrial IoT solutions for equipment monitoring and performance analysis.
  • Supports installation, commissioning, debugging, and validation of automation projects.
  • Collaborates with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, IT, and vendors to deploy technology solutions.
  • Develops JavaScript, Python scripts, SQL queries, APIs, and automated workflows to collect and analyze data.
  • Creates and maintains Grafana dashboards to improve live data visibility and reduce downtime.
  • Supports predictive maintenance and condition-based initiatives through sensor deployment and trend analysis.
  • Assists in defining project scope, estimating costs, and evaluating investments for automation projects.
  • Keeps knowledge of emerging technologies and best practices in smart manufacturing and IoT.

Job Responsibilities

Scope of Position: Supports the controls, connectivity, and data collection systems of manufacturing equipment, assembly lines, test stands, CNC machines, robotics, programmable controllers, sensor networks, and real-time monitoring systems to enable Industry 4.0 initiatives.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Automation, or related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in manufacturing, controls engineering, industrial automation, or Industrial IoT environments.

Develops specifications for data extraction, sensor integration, and system interfaces. Designs and implements automation and Industrial IoT solutions for equipment monitoring, testing, and performance analysis. Supports installation, commissioning, debugging, and validation of automation, digitalization, and Industry 4.0 initiatives. Collaborates with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, IT, and vendors to deploy technology solutions that improve efficiency and reliability. Develops and supports JavaScript, Python scripts, SQL queries, APIs, and automated workflows to collect, process, and analyze operational information. Creates and maintain Grafana dashboards to improve live data visibility, reduce downtime, and support continuous improvement. Supports predictive maintenance and condition-based initiatives through sensor deployment and trend analysis. Utilizes problem-solving techniques such as 8D, root cause analysis, design of experiments, and mistake proofing to resolve technical issues and improve performance. Assists in defining project scope, estimating costs, and evaluating investments related to automation, digitalization, and Industry 4.0 projects. Maintains knowledge of emerging technologies, industry standards, and best practices related to smart manufacturing and Industrial IoT. Interfaces with machine builders, controls engineers, and product engineers to integrate automation, reporting, and equipment performance requirements. Supports standardization and continuous improvement efforts related to DBXX implementation, machine integration, and facility-wide data architecture. Familiarity with Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLCs, HMI development, CNC machine controls, robotics integration, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus TCP/IP is required. Must possess working knowledge of CBM, DBXX, OPC UA, MQTT, Kepware, Ignition, JavaScript, Python, SQL, Power BI, Grafana, sensor integration, predictive maintenance, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
