Investor/Associate, Strategic Investments - Toronto

About the Firm:

A Toronto-based investment fund with US ~$5B in assets under management across eight main funds. They specialize in growth equity investing and are currently deploying $1.4B across their growth and dedicated late-stage fund (Series D-F), where they lead follow-on investments to double down and support select growth fund companies as they mature and enter their next phase of growth. Their follow-on investments can scale up to $300M with Limited Partner (LP) co-Investments and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs). The team is a mix of investors, entrepreneurs, and operators who work closely with their portfolio companies to help them scale. They also have a team of 20+ engineers and data scientists who work with their companies to accelerate their AI roadmaps after investment. Select portfolio companies include Shopify, ClickUp, Armis, Cyera, IEX Group, and Island Software.

The Role:

The Investor/Associate, Strategic Investments role is a unique opportunity to build your career. In this hybrid role, which sits within the Capital Formation team you will work closely with a tight-knit group of peers across the Investment Team, Capital Formation, and the AI Lab to invest in later stage growth opportunities. This will include diligence, portfolio value creation and governance, fundraising, and investment structuring. The main focus of this investor role is asset selection, deal execution and capital raising for follow-on investments, and candidates are not expected to drive sourcing for the Growth Funds. The team is based in Toronto (with hybrid / flexible work from home opportunities) and candidates must be located in the GTA or willing/able to relocate.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Identifying and Evaluating Follow-on Investments: Gain a deep understanding of their portfolio to monitor, assess, and proactively identify follow-on investment opportunities for their late stage fund, LP co-investments, and SPVs.
  • Building Relationships:
  • Develop strong connections with executives at their portfolio to help identify and create opportunities in their most exciting later-stage companies. As well, develop relationships across their LP base, with investors from partner funds and market experts from investment banks.
  • Over time, represent the firm as a board observer alongside Lead Investors for portfolio companies where they have made significant follow-on investments.
  • Conducting Market Research, Due Diligence and Financial Modelling:
  • Build expertise in various technology trends, vertical markets, thesis areas, and perform comprehensive research on specific companies and industries.
  • Handle various aspects of investment due diligence, including business model, market, management, competitive analysis, financial/returns modeling, cap table analysis, and legal diligence.
  • Capital Raising: Support LP due diligence and fundraising for co-investment and SPV processes, identify various fund structures and strategies to optimize follow-on investments in the future.
  • Optimizing the Team: Leverage AI to drive the efficiency and effectiveness of internal operational processes, such as due diligence and reporting.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Intellectual Curiosity: You are passionate about software and AI and eager to learn complex concepts quickly by engaging with subject matter experts.
  • Respect for Entrepreneurs: You share their core value of respecting entrepreneurs, understanding the challenges of building innovative companies, and fostering trust through empathy.
  • Collaborative Spirit: You thrive when working with a team, which is a core component to life at the firm. It is essential to work as a team to develop unique perspectives about investment opportunities, markets, and investment vehicle structuring.
  • Creative Problem Solving: You excel at developing and implementing creative processes and frameworks, whether it’s during diligence, investment structuring, or working on high-impact initiatives with their portfolio companies and LPs.
  • Analytical Mindset: You have a sharp eye for detail and can dive deep into business fundamentals, technologies, and vertical markets, evaluating them from a first-principles perspective.
  • Strong Communication: You excel at distilling and communicating diligence insights to both internal and external stakeholders, while confidently engaging with entrepreneurs and contributing to both LP and board-level discussions.

Ideal Candidates:

  • You likely have 3-6 years of experience in secondaries, co-investments, investment banking, or private equity.
  • Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

We thank all candidates for their interest in this opportunity. Only those that apply and most closely match the requirements of the client will be contacted for an interview.
