Overview

The Building Ontario Fund (BOF) is a crown agency that works with trusted institutional investors and Indigenous communities to attract new investment in priority infrastructure while helping to maintain responsible fiscal plan today and for future generation. Projects financed through the Building Ontario Fund are focused on the following areas: affordable housing, long-term care, energy, transportation, and municipal and community infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

General

  • Work within a team environment, with direct responsibilities focused on supporting the Investments Team mandate across Priority Sectors (i.e. Long-Term Care, Student Housing, Affordable Housing, Energy, Transportation, Municipal and Community Infrastructure, Critical Minerals) and through a variety of potential Investment Structures (e.g. equity, preferred equity, mezzanine financing, subordinated debt, senior debt).
  • Participate in meetings and presentations with senior management and external partners and support development of associated materials.
  • Support the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of investment processes, practices, tools, strategies, and reporting.
  • Perform market research and industry analysis to support origination, investment and asset management activities and decision making.
  • Manage all project files, data and information within a current, comprehensive and easy to navigate SharePoint structure.
  • Investment Origination
  • Support research to ensure Investments Team is up-to-date and knowledge on economic trends, infrastructure developments, and government policies impacting investments.
  • Provide input into decisions pertaining to the investment strategies.
  • Intake and organize all Sponsor and Project submission materials. Triage submission materials and identify missing information.
  • Review and analyze Sponsor submission materials and draft Sponsor assessments, including preliminary KYC assessment.
  • Investment Underwriting
  • May take a leading or supporting role in conducting comprehensive Financial Modeling, valuation, and scenario analysis to assess potential investment opportunities across Priority Sectors and through Investment Structures.
  • Actively support due diligence (e.g. financial, legal, design and construction, operational, insurance, regulatory) and ensure the same is properly reflected and assessed in Financial Modelling and risk analysis.
  • Support development of target investment returns / cost of debt on its investments through detailed financial analysis (e.g. market comparables, credit assessment, exit / liquidity considerations).
  • Support credit-risk evaluation and support development of informed and measured opinions and recommendations based on research results.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g. legal, policy/partnerships, finance, communications) and external advisors (e.g. financial, legal, technical, appraisal, insurance, government policy/regulation).
  • Prepare inputs and materials for the development of Investment Committee, Board, and Senior Management memoranda, reports, presentations and other materials to support investment decision making.
  • Investment Execution
  • Provide financial, analytical and research support to negotiations with external sponsors/developers, borrowers, co-investors, lenders, and other investment stakeholders.
  • Provide documentary and administrative support to commercial and financial closing process for investments.
  • Asset Management
  • Prepare financial and analytical reports and assessments in respect of funded investments, including active monitoring of monthly drawdown requests.
  • Support performance assessment, credit assessment and valuation analysis related to ongoing internal portfolio reporting.
  • Support investment value enhancement, restructuring, and divestment (as and when required), including through research and due diligence, financial modelling and analysis, development of materials for internal and external stakeholders, negotiations and execution.
Qualifications

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or other related quantitative discipline.
  • MBA, CFA, CAIA, or any other relevant professional designation would be an asset.

Experience

  • 2+ years of relevant experience (e.g. banking, investment fund, developer, asset management, financial advisor) in related field (e.g. real estate, infrastructure).
  • Investment experience across multiple Priority Sectors would be an asset.
  • Investment experience across multiple Investment Structures would be an asset.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of investment theories, principles and practices; business finance/management operations and requirements; sector trends and challenges; and regulatory, partnership and funding/financial issues.
  • Financial acumen and the ability to build and manage complex Financial Models (including DCF and IRR models, cash flow projection) and perform quantitative analysis, and review/understand financial statements and investment metrics.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management principles and due diligence analysis to make informed recommendations.
  • Research and business intelligence analytical processes and methodologies to design/conceptualize and support/coordinate research projects/studies.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in quantitative analysis and data interpretation, with the ability to translate complex data into accessible reporting and actionable insights.
  • Excellent organizational and priority management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate complex situations in logical, factual, and clear terms; prepare and present reports, briefing materials and correspondence; support senior management during internal and external engagement.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and other applications as required.
  • Experience with Argus, Costar, Morningstar, Bloomberg would be an asset.
