Job description

Do you thrive on challenges and excel in a collaborative, team-driven environment? Are you passionate about protecting Alberta’s stunning natural landscapes and known for your keen attention to detail?

We are looking for skilled and dedicated investigators to join our newly created Regulatory Audit and Investigation Service within the Crown Land Enforcement Branch. This is an exciting and meaningful opportunity to become part of a forward-thinking team committed to delivering excellence in service while safeguarding the integrity, health, and sustainability of Alberta’s Crown lands.

About the Role :

Reporting to the Crown Land Investigation Unit Team Lead, you will be the subject matter expert for land management regulatory investigations and enforcement activities within the Lands Operations Division. You will lead and support complex, often high-profile investigations related to land and range management, ensuring adherence to legislation and regulatory best practices.

In this critical role, you will :

  • Conduct thorough regulatory investigations under the Public Lands Act, Forest Reserves Act, and Provincial Parks Act.
  • Efficiently manage investigations from initiation to resolution, while concurrently handling multiple non-compliance files through effective workload management strategies and prioritization techniques.
  • Have a strong understanding of the various compliance enforcement tools legislatively available in the regulatory environment and be able to seek out creative solutions.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and enforcement strategies.
  • Provide specialized training and mentorship to staff across government departments.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders—including provincial lands officers, agrologists, conservation officers, and legal counsel—to ensure investigations are timely, fair, and legally sound.

Your extensive experience in legislation, investigative techniques, and complex case management will be key in handling sensitive and politically nuanced cases. This is a highly visible role where your work will directly influence Alberta’s environmental stewardship and regulatory landscape.

What You Bring :

  • A strong foundation in environmental regulatory enforcement with a background in land management.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting complex investigations with legal implications.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and the ability to interpret and apply it effectively.
  • Excellent communication and well-developed collaboration skills to work across diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to navigate politically sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.

Beyond investigative work, you will play a strategic role in continuing to shape compliance and enforcement policies as well as in delivering targeted training that enhances the capabilities of the entire division.
