Intro to Game Design (Build a Mario Game) Instructors for Calgary Youth Courses (Part/Time Contract)

Circuit Stream is a leader in future skills training and learning content. We offer world-class educational services for teen and adult learners with a focus on the skills needed to leverage emerging technology.

We are seeking passionate Game Designer with experience utilizing Microsoft MakeCode Arcade, to instruct our Intro to Game Design: Build a Mario Game summer programs to learners aged 9-12. Students will be learning the foundational concepts of game design, in order to design unique and playful characters, bringing them to life through animation. Learners will build their own game levels, crafting challenges and environments using Microsoft’s MakeCode Arcade to design, code, and test their 2D platformer game. The ideal instructor candidates for this course should possess a strong foundation in game design fundamentals, experience composing platformer games using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade as well as some teaching, TA or training experience.

Intro to Game Design: Build a Mario Game will be offered at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) from June 30-July 11 & August 11-22, 9am-2pm. Candidates selected for interviews will be contacted starting in March 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging and comprehensive classroom sessions with youth learners following the Intro to Game Design: Build a Mario Game course curriculum
  • Provide constructive feedback, guidance, and mentorship to students as they ideate, develop, and iterate on their simple 2D platformer game.
  • Showcase proficiency in game design concepts such as building game levels, crafting challenges and creating environments using Microsoft’s MakeCode Arcade
  • Share real-world experiences, case studies, and insights to offer students a holistic understanding of the field.
  • Grade assessments that accurately measure student understanding and progress within the course.

Requirements

  • Previous professional experience in game design and coding roles.
  • Bachelor's degree or final year studies in Computer Science, or graduate of Circuit Stream Game Design Bootcamp or similar programs.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to convey complex concepts in an accessible and engaging manner.
  • Innate logical thinking and the ability to inspire and nurture logical thinking in students.
  • A passion for guiding and mentoring students, fostering their growth, and providing meaningful feedback.
  • Willingness to adapt to evolving curriculum needs, industry trends, and emerging technologies.
  • A collaborative attitude, eager to contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.
  • A proactive attitude towards ongoing professional development and a willingness to learn and stay up-to-date with industry advancements.
  • A strong portfolio of relevant work to showcase your skills and experience.
