About the role

We’re looking for an Intermediate Underwriter to join our growing Contract Surety team!

This hybrid role is based out of our office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

About the opportunity :

Your work will involve underwriting contract surety accounts by reviewing and interpreting financial statements to conduct financial and credit risk analysis, making decisions within your underwriting authority.

You will review financial statements and relevant laws associated with the bond type. The successful candidate will demonstrate financial acumen and excellent rapport-building skills by maintaining positive relationships with clients such as insurance brokers, lawyers, chartered accountants, and government officials.

What you’ll do here :

• Manage a diverse portfolio of contract surety accounts
• Analyze and secure underwriting data, perform financial analysis, and apply critical thinking to underwriting decisions and client issues
• Assess risk and recommend approval of new and renewing contract surety facilities
• Build partnerships with brokers and clients, delivering solutions professionally and responsively
• Develop broker relationships and marketing strategies to foster new business opportunities
• Prioritize workflow to maximize productivity and meet deadlines
• Assist in preparing and submitting special acceptances to reinsurers

Maintain quality control and profitable growth

• Maintain strong knowledge of construction industry trends, market conditions, and challenges
• Participate actively in industry functions, forums, and events
• Travel may be required

What you bring to the table :

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or relevant experience
• Surety or related business experience, or experience in commercial insurance underwriting or brokerage
• Construction estimating experience (asset)
• Solid understanding of financial statements
• Strong analytical and research skills
• Excellent customer service and sound judgment

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work independently and in a team
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite
