Job summary

WSP in Canada seeks an Intermediate Transmission Line Engineer to join the Transmission & Distribution Electrical team in Western Canada, with preference for Edmonton. The role focuses on designing, managing, and overseeing high‑voltage transmission line projects to support renewable energy integration and grid reliability.

The candidate will lead technical aspects, prepare design deliverables, manage budgets and schedules, and coordinate with clients and contractors while mentoring team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, electrical or engineering physics.
  • 5–10 years of transmission design experience and bid package development.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license is required.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE and PLS-Lite.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation and MFAD.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams in complex EPC environments.
  • Knowledge of transmission line routing and construction practices.
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities.

  • Lead design projects for 34.5 kV–500 kV transmission lines, including new lines and upgrades.
  • Prepare and review plans, profiles, materials, and construction specifications.
  • Manage multiple projects within budget and schedule.
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and clients to ensure satisfaction.
  • Provide technical project management and maintain client relationships.
  • Oversee project reporting, invoicing and accounts receivable.
  • Mentor team members and support business development.

Job Description

We are looking for an Intermediate Transmission Line Engineer to join our Transmission & Distribution Electrical team in Western Canada, with preference for Edmonton. The role focuses on designing, managing, and overseeing high‑voltage transmission line projects to support renewable energy integration and strengthen grid reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Lead technical aspects of transmission line design projects (34.5 kV–500 kV), including new lines, relocations, rebuilds, upgrades, structure replacements, and fiber‑optic additions.
  • Prepare and review design deliverables such as plan and profile drawings, material selection, and construction specifications.
  • Conduct quality reviews of internal and subcontractor deliverables.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Evaluate technical options, criteria, and routes for design merit.
  • Apply knowledge of construction standards for high‑voltage line work.
  • Coordinate with contractors and subcontractors to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Act as Technical Project Management Lead and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Manage project reporting, invoicing, accounts receivable, and unbilled work.
  • Develop and monitor scope, schedules, and budgets against plan and contracts.
  • Ensure adherence to budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Serve as primary liaison between client and project team to understand client interests.
  • Proactively identify challenges and implement solutions for project success.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to the project team.
  • Travel to client offices, field sites, or vendor facilities as required.
  • Support business development activities and participate in proposal preparation.
Qualifications
  • Civil (BSCE), Mechanical (BSME), Electrical (BSEE) or Engineering Physics (BSc) degree from an accredited university.
  • Between 5 to 10 years of experience in transmission design, including design of overhead high‑voltage and extra high‑voltage transmission lines, route selection, line and structure spotting, structure design and analysis, and development of construction bid packages.
  • Proficiency with PLS‑CADD, PLS‑POLE, and PLS‑Lite.
  • Experience in a Project Engineering or Project Management capacity working with multidisciplinary teams on complex projects.
  • Must hold a Professional Engineering license (P.Eng.).
  • Experience with AutoCAD/MicroStation, MFAD, and Microsoft Project is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of transmission line routing, field program planning, project management, EPC projects, and line construction.
  • Distribution/under‑build design experience is a plus.
  • Managerial and leadership skills.

Compensation

BC, AB, SK, NWT & NU: $98,800 to $130,800

MB & ON: $90,100 to $124,100

Atlantic Provinces & QC: $89,200 to $118,500
