Intermediate to Senior Tailings Engineer (2025013152)

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate to Senior Tailings Engineer to join our team in Calgary, Alberta .

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment, and construction materials.

As our Intermediate to Senior Tailings Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

  • Support a wide variety of tailings or water embankment dam projects including :
  • Coordination of field investigations
  • Coordination and interpretation of laboratory testing
  • Design and construction monitoring
  • Geotechnical analysis
  • Dam safety inspections and reviews
  • Provide technical support and leadership on projects and for staff, including conducting technical reviews of calculations and analyses, as well as performing technical analyses where appropriate;
  • Provide guidance, and where necessary, support in coordination, preparation of cost estimates, tender submissions, technical documentation, client reports, progress reports, project scheduling / resourcing, and meeting deadlines and budgets on projects;
  • Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals;
  • Supporting mentoring, coaching, and training of staff;
  • Work with the Branch Manager in the development of new business opportunities;
  • Establishing, developing, promoting, and maintaining relationships with clients;
  • Active participation in the field on a project-specific basis as dictated by the needs of the project to meet client expectations and project objectives;
  • Manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams;
  • Participate in the organization and management of a leading geotechnical tailings testing facility.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Civil or Geological Engineering;
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant (post-degree) experience in the Geotechnical or Geological Engineering field in a consulting or mining industry environment. Local Canadian experience is strongly preferred;
  • Strong analytical skills in soil mechanics and tailings behaviour including slope stability, seepage, settlement, deformation, etc.;
  • Strong technical writing, interpersonal communication, and emotional intelligence;
  • Class 5 Drivers license;
  • Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments;
  • Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote mining sites;
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required;
  • Currently registered or eligible as a Professional Engineer with APEGA and / or EGBC;
  • Graduate Degree (Masters or higher) preferred;
  • Knowledge of oil sands tailings management practices and current technologies;
  • Knowledge of large strain consolidation and use of numerical models to predict the performance of tailings and mining landforms;
  • Knowledge of current oil sands tailings laboratory testing methods;
  • Geotechnical instrumentation installation, monitoring and interpretation;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing);
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate with a team in various environments.

Additional Information

  • Criminal Record Check may be conducted;
  • Drug and alcohol testing may be required prior to accessing client sites;
  • 3 Year Driver's Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested;
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
