Intermediate Substation Physical Designer/Engineer (Electrical Arrangement)

Position Overview: We seek a Substation Physical Designer/Engineer to join our National Electrical Team in Ontario, with locations in Thornhill, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Toronto, Kitchener, or Ottawa. The role involves designing electric substations for medium and high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy projects, applying relevant codes, producing detailed physical arrangements, plans, elevations, grounding analysis, layout, cable plans, equipment specifications, and construction documents. Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders is essential to meet project milestones and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design medium and high voltage (5kV – 735kV) substation projects, including general arrangements, grounding, cable plans, equipment specifications, and documentation.
  • Conduct grounding, lightning, and bus fault stress analyses.
  • Support procurement, construction, and coordination efforts.
  • Develop drawings in collaboration with the Physical Lead.
  • Coordinate with various project disciplines and participate in client reviews and feasibility studies.
  • Assist in estimating and proposal development.
  • Conduct site visits to support project execution.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 3-6 years of relevant experience in high-voltage substation design, preferably in consulting.
  • Working towards P.Eng registration (PEO).
  • Experience with voltages up to 735 kV, AutoCAD or MicroStation, and grounding/lighting studies software.
  • Ability to assess mechanical and thermal effects of fault currents.
  • Experience in proposal writing, project estimating, and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of industry standards like NEC and Electrical Safety Code.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
