Job description
Overview

Intermediate Structural Engineer - Masonry Structures (new or restoration) — The Canada Masonry Design Centre (CMDC) is seeking a Structural or Civil Engineer to join our Vancouver office as a Masonry Design Engineer. This is a role with CMDC, a contractor-funded, not-for-profit technical organization, contributing to design innovation, industry education, and the development of national building codes and standards.

CMDC bridges the gap between research, design and practice, supporting engineers, architects, masons and manufacturers with resources, technical guidance, and training programs that shape how masonry is used in construction across Canada. This position offers a collaborative team culture and strong work-life balance.

If you’re ready to grow your career while helping shape the future of masonry in Canada, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities
  • Be the Local Technical Liaison and develop strong working relationships with the Masonry Contractors Association (MCA) of BC and the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association (CMCA) of BC & Yukon. Provide trusted technical guidance to local contractors, designers, and construction professionals while promoting effective use of masonry in new projects. Attend local meetings, communicate with local masonry contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers, and support industry growth in BC.
  • Support Masonry Education and Research by collaborating with the University of British Columbia and other partners on research and education initiatives. Advocate for properly designed masonry in public and private sector projects. Deliver educational seminars and technical presentations to local design professionals.
  • Deliver Expert Technical Support as part of a national team, providing practical, hands-on assistance to architects, engineers, and masonry contractors. This includes technical writing, conflict resolution, and code-compliant design support for real-world construction challenges.
  • Contribute to National CMDC Initiatives such as codes and standards development, MASS software support, technical guides and publications, training seminars, university-level courses, and representing CMDC at industry events and stakeholder meetings.
  • Engage in field work and industry leadership; adapt to a dynamic association environment and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Building Science, Materials, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in masonry design (new or existing buildings, structural or building science), with knowledge/application of CSA S304, CSA A371, and the National Building Code of Canada (masonry).
  • Professional registration as an EIT in BC (required); P.Eng. designation (preferred).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to clearly present technical content to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with technical seminars or public presentations is a strong asset.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a small, national team; flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities in a dynamic association environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and structural analysis tools (RAM Suite, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD, S-Frame); WordPress experience is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience in construction, material testing, or applied research is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to attend construction sites and industry events.
About the Position
  • Location: In-person work arrangements in Vancouver, BC
  • Travel: Periodic travel within BC and occasional travel outside the province (including the U.S.)
  • Hours: Permanent, full-time position (37.5 hours/week, no expectation for overtime or extended hours)
  • Base Salary: $85,000–$105,000 (based on experience)
  • Benefits: Group Health Insurance, Group Disability Benefits, RRSP Matching Program
