Position Purpose

The incumbent supports the University of Ottawa’s diverse student population, including undergraduates, graduates, and alumni, by providing comprehensive career development resources, tools, and initiatives. This role encompasses delivering evidence-based guidance on employability skills, job market trends, and essential competencies, while addressing the unique needs of various student groups.

Serving as a subject matter expert and key resource to faculties and university partners, the incumbent collaborates closely with academic units and services to embed career development and experiential learning into programs and curricula when relevant. They develop, implement/support and evaluate customized career tools, workshops, and events that empower students to successfully navigate their career paths.

A critical component of the role involves advocating for, and persuading, professors, departments, and services to integrate career education into their academic offerings, thereby ensuring a holistic student experience that bridges academic learning with career readiness.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Career Advising and Resource Development

• Identify, develop, and adapt diverse career tools and resources tailored to support students’ and alumni’s job search, networking, and career development goals.

• Meet with students individually or in groups to provide personalized career advice, including job search strategies, labour market research, and education options. Cover topics such as career exploration, competency development, résumé and cover letter writing, interview skills, job search strategies, and integrating experiential learning into career planning.

Program and Workshop Design, Delivery, and Evaluation

• Develop, implement, facilitate, and evaluate customized modules, workshops, webinars, and in-class presentations grounded in established and emerging career development practices, including the use of technology.

• Tailor content to meet the needs of various academic programs and diverse student populations, including students with disabilities, international students, Indigenous students.

Collaborative Approach, Influencing and Integration

• Build and maintain collaborative engagement with faculties, academic units, and university services and develop joint initiatives and resources that integrate career development into the student experience.

• Proactively connect with and convince professors, departments, and services to embed career development within their course or program.

Event Coordination and Special Projects

• Coordinate or support career-related events and activities such as guest speaker sessions and networking events tailored to diverse student groups (e.g., international students, Indigenous students, students with disabilities).

• Lead or participate in special projects or initiatives addressing emerging needs or targeted initiatives, ensuring alignment with an innovative perspective in career development for students.

Supervision of Student Staff

• Recruit, train, supervise, and support student staff and volunteers involved in career development programming.

Knowledge Mobilization

• Maintain current knowledge of career development practices, labour market trends, workplace issues, and resources to provide accurate, up-to-date guidance.

• Engage in learning events or communities of practice to further strengthen our institutional capacities and promote the University’s excellence and influence.

What you will bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, education, counselling, human resources); a master’s degree is an asset.

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in career development, including individual guidance/support and workshop delivery.

• Bilingualism in English and French (spoken and written) is required.

• Knowledge of labour market trends and postsecondary education options in Canada and abroad.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to support diverse student populations.

• Proven ability to develop and facilitate tailored career-related programming, workshops and events, making use of relevant tools and technology.

• Experience in developing and sustaining collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support the integration of initiatives into broader programming and scope.

• Demonstrated sensitivity to diversity, equity, and accessibility trends.

• Experience in leading special projects and initiatives.
