Job Description

The Opportunity: Are you passionate about the environment and looking to make a significant impact in the Environmental sector? WSP is seeking an Intermediate to Senior Wetlands and Vegetation Ecologist to join our Transportation and Municipal team across Alberta and Saskatchewan.

You will work on full lifecycle projects, including proposal scoping, project delivery, regulatory permitting, and construction in Alberta and Saskatchewan. You will report to the Group Manager and Technical Leads, ensuring guidance and mentorship.

Responsibilities:
  • Experience with Alberta Wetland Policy, wetland assessments, delineation, classification, and ABWRET
  • Knowledge of Alberta Watercourse Crossings and related Codes of Practice
  • Understanding of environmental legislation at municipal, provincial, and federal levels; experience with permits like Water Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act is an asset
  • Coordinate and conduct ecological field programs, including vegetation, soils, wetlands, fisheries, and wildlife surveys
  • Mentor and train junior biologists and ecologists
  • Research, develop proposals, and prepare reports
  • Manage project delivery, contracts, and documentation
  • Assist with impact assessments and wetland or fisheries projects; occasional travel may be required
Qualifications:
  • B.Sc. in Biology or Tech Diploma with relevant experience
  • Registration with a professional body (e.g., P.Biol., P.Ag., R.T.Biol.) in Alberta is an asset
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental regulations, including Alberta Wetland Policy
  • Valid driver’s license (Class 5 with GDL removed)
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; GIS skills are an asset
  • Vegetation, fish, and wildlife identification skills
  • Experience managing projects, budgets, and contracts
  • Experience with habitat restoration is a plus
