Job summary

Saskatchewan Blue Cross is seeking an Intermediate/Senior Group Underwriter to manage new group quotations, implement new groups, and renew complex group clients. You will assess and rate group employee benefit plans and mentor junior underwriters.

The role reports to the Manager, Underwriting and requires collaboration with Sales and Executives. Strong analytical, communication and leadership skills are essential for success in this fast-paced, client-focused environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Commerce or related field; equivalent experience considered.
• 3–5 years of underwriting group health and life benefits experience.
• Strong MS 365 (Word/Excel) proficiency and ability to learn new software.

JOB FUNCTION

Reporting directly to the Manager, Underwriting, the Intermediate/Senior Group Underwriter will be responsible for new group business quotations, implementing new groups, and renewing existing group clients of a more complex nature. This position supports the sales effort through the accurate and efficient assessment and rating of both prospective and existing group employee benefit plans. There is a degree of mentorship and coaching required of this position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate with the Sales Department to develop and implement acquisition and retention strategies for large and complex groups with multiple benefit lines and risk factors
• Communicate underwriting information effectively to internal & external stakeholders
• Participate in meetings and presentations with Executives, Managers, Brokers, and Clients as necessary
• Assist in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data for pricing and various projects
• Contribute to both corporate & department initiatives and projects as needed
• Assist in inputting data into multiple software systems
• Analyze and assess risk, calculate rates, and generate rate quotations for Group life, income replacement, health, and dental benefits using established factors and formulae
• Follow established underwriting standards, guidelines, and procedures in line with industry practices and corporate objectives
• Assist in modifying plan design to meet diverse client requirements
• Maintain accurate documentation and up-to-date files, recording all key decisions and actions
• Assist in maintaining the Department procedures manual
• Review life and disability proposals for large groups, to ensure adherence to the original quotation
• Provide guidance, support, mentorship, and coaching to the underwriting team as necessary
• Review quotes and renewals from other Underwriters that exceed individual authority limits

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

• Completion of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in Mathematical Sciences, Commerce, relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is required
• 3 to 5 years of experience in underwriting group health and life benefits
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 including Word and Excel with an ability to easily learn new software programs.
• Robust mathematical and analytical ability with high attention to detail
• Must have a strong ability to create reports, spreadsheets, and logical graphical representation of data
• Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
• Established experience providing mentorship, coaching and performance feedback
• Proven professional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Clear organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills and a willingness to take calculated risks
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task, handle shifting priorities and meet frequent deadlines while maintaining strict confidentiality
• Results oriented, highly motivated and self-directed with the ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment
• Ability to communicate with clients using compassion and empathy to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• A sense of initiative, with the ability to set priorities, follow workflows, and meet deadlines
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable, adjusting to shifts in workload and task priorities
• Strong adherence to privacy and confidentiality standards and practices
• Legally entitled to work in Canada on an unrestricted basis
