Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a P.Eng designation, and have at least 5 years of relevant experience, ideally with knowledge of Indigenous cultures. Job description

Become a team member for the largest Indigenous-led infrastructure project in Canada, which will connect 17 remote First Nation communities in Northern Ontario with clean, reliable, and accessible grid power! First Nation leadership owners of Wataynikaneyap established the Guiding Principles, endorsed by its partners, that set out expectations for the Company’s development, including respect for the land and First Nation way of life and is reflected in the company’s Guiding Principles.

Wataynikaneyap Power PM Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of FortisOntario Inc., acts as the Project Manager of Wataynikaneyap Power LP (“Wataynikaneyap Power”). Wataynikaneyap Power is a licensed transmission entity, majority-owned by a partnership of 24 First Nation communities in partnership with Fortis Inc. and other private investors. The partnership is an unprecedented undertaking and has constructed 1,800 kilometres of 230 kV, 115 kV, and 44 kV transmission lines and over 22 substations in northwestern Ontario. Located near Thunder Bay in our Fort William First Nation, ON office, Wataynikaneyap Power is currently recruiting for a talented:

Intermediate/Senior Electrical Engineer

Full-Time Permanent Position

The Intermediate/Senior Electrical Engineer plays a key role in supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electrical transmission system. Reporting to the Director, Operations at Wataynikaneyap Power PM Inc., the incumbent is responsible for applying a solid understanding of operational, maintenance, control, and protection requirements across the transmission system. This role coordinates the development and enhancement of operational processes and procedures related to the operation and maintenance of substation equipment, SCADA and communication systems, system control, and outage planning. The position also oversees specific projects aimed at implementing and enhancing system monitoring, dispatch, and reporting functions, while ensuring the integrity of protection and control systems. A strong commitment to safety for self and others, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence is essential in all aspects of this role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and registered in good standing as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
  • 5+ years’ experience related to substation equipment, protection and control, communications, and/or control room operations, preferably in a regulated electrical utility environment.
  • Knowledge of IESO Market Rules, OEB Codes, IHSA Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Utility Work Protection Code or equivalent standards in other jurisdictions
  • Familiarity with bulk electrical system components and transmission system planning concepts.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, communication media and system networking concepts.
  • Understanding of NERC-CIP security standards and other NERC reliability standards applicable to electrical transmission systems.
  • Technical expertise in planning, design, construction and/or maintenance of power transmission lines, substations, and/or protection systems considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations – First Nations language considered an asset.
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, originality, and engineering knowledge to develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Proven ability to make informed decisions in complex, high-pressure situations with competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (both verbal and written) and can easily liaise and interact with all types of personalities while maintaining professionalism.
  • Demonstrated high level of attention to accuracy and proven attention to detail.
  • High-level of respect for Indigenous Peoples and their culture, language, traditions.
  • Must have a valid Ontario “G” driver’s license and maintain a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Travel will be required for job duties.
