Job summary

EXP offers an Intermediate Roadway Designer role in Ontario with a focus on highway projects across Brampton, Markham, London or Hamilton.

You will join a Transportation team to design, coordinate and deliver road design solutions while mentoring junior staff and liaising with clients and authorities. This position emphasizes standards compliance and project delivery in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Proficient with MicroStation/Openroads/AutoCAD/Civil 3D for highway design.
  • Strong skills with ProjectWise, Word, Excel and MS Project.
  • Very familiar with CPS and HiCo applications.
  • Knowledge of MTO/Metrolinx standards and municipal design drafting.
  • Experience in cost estimating, quantity prep and specs writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to gain design approvals from authorities.
  • Independent, organized team player with strong communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under tight schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare preliminary design reports and criteria for new or rehabbed highways.
  • Create design drawings and review for compliance with industry standards.
  • Prepare contract specs, tender docs and agency approvals.
  • Review and issue final shop drawings.
  • Mentor junior staff within the division.
  • Liaise with clients, sub-consultants, contractors and supervision staff.
  • Assist with proposals for future projects.

What a day at EXP has in store for you
  • Prepare preliminary design reports (PDR), design criteria, preliminary and detailed designs associated with new and/or the rehabilitation of divided highways, arterial regional roads, collector roads, and local roads.
  • Prepare preliminary designs for CADD staff and review drawings for compliance with applicable industry and client standards.
  • Prepare Contract Specifications, Tender Documents, and Applications for Agency Approvals.
  • Review and issue finalized Shop Drawings.
  • Coordinate and mentor junior staff working within the division.
  • Liaise with Clients, Sub-consultants, Contractors and construction supervision staff.
  • Assist with the preparation of Proposals for future projects.
What Your Experience Looks Like
  • Emphasis and proficiency with MicroStation, Openroads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D. Experience with earlier versions of MicroStation and Inroads will be considered.
  • Strong computer software skills with ProjectWise, Word, Excel & MS Project.
  • Highly proficient in the use of MTO’s software applications CPS and HiCo.
  • Comprehensive knowledge with MTO and Metrolinx standards, including various Municipal & Regional design and drafting standards.
  • Skilled in cost estimating, quantity preparation and specification writing.
  • Have a track record of gaining approval of infrastructure designs from MTO, roads authorities and environmental agencies.
  • Independent, Organized and Motivated Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and deliver projects under stringent schedules in a fast-paced turnaround environment.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience.

The salary range for this role is between $80,739K - $107,026K. The actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location.
