Job Title: Intermediate Personal Lines Underwriter

Department: Operations
Reports to: Team Leader, National Underwriting Operations

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

As an Intermediate Personal Lines Underwriter, you will play a dual role:

  • Technical Underwriting Expert – assessing and underwriting personal lines risks aligned with corporate risk appetites.
  • Designated Broker Relationship Manager – acting as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of assigned brokers, fostering strong partnerships, identifying growth opportunities, and representing the company at industry events.

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing and nurturing broker relationships to drive profitable growth and retention.
  • Providing personalized service and underwriting support to assigned brokers.
  • Identifying broker trends, market feedback, and competitive insights to inform product development and system enhancements.
  • Representing the company at broker meetings, trade shows, and industry functions as a trusted advisor and brand ambassador.
  • Collaborating with internal teams to resolve broker issues and improve service delivery.
  • Contributing to underwriting support for Ontario property and auto customers, as part of our national underwriting responsibilities.
  • Participating in a half-day on / half-day off phone support rotation and being comfortable handling inbound broker calls to provide timely underwriting assistance.

STRUCTURE

This position reports to the Team Leader of the Underwriting team within National Underwriting Operations. Underwriters at this level are given authority and accountability based on experience and performance, with opportunities to influence strategic direction through broker insights.

KEY JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

Accountability #1: Broker Relationship Management & Business Development

  • Serve as the designated underwriter for a panel of brokers, building strong, trust-based relationships.
  • Actively engage with brokers to understand their needs, provide tailored underwriting solutions, and support their growth.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within your broker portfolio.
  • Participate in broker performance reviews and provide feedback to improve mutual outcomes.
  • Represent the company at broker events, trade shows, and industry functions.

Accountability #2: Production & Service Excellence

  • Deliver exceptional service to brokers and internal stakeholders by managing underwriting transactions efficiently.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of personal lines products and apply it to meet broker and client needs.
  • Support cross-selling and up-selling initiatives aligned with corporate goals.
  • Support underwriting activities for Ontario property and auto lines, ensuring consistency and quality across regions.
  • Provide phone-based support during scheduled shifts, ensuring prompt and professional service to broker inquiries.

Accountability #3: Risk Assessment & Compliance

  • Apply underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and authority levels to assess and price risks accurately.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and internal standards for underwriting and billing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying process gaps and recommending solutions.

Accountability #4: Strategic Feedback & Innovation

  • Gather and analyze broker feedback to identify trends, pain points, and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with product, technology, and operations teams to recommend enhancements to systems and offerings.
  • Act as a voice of the broker within the organization to drive innovation and service improvements.

Accountability #5: Mentoring & Team Collaboration

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters as needed.
  • Collaborate across departments to resolve complex broker issues and deliver seamless service.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Minimum 3–5 years of personal lines underwriting experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-first mindset.
  • Proven ability to build and manage broker relationships.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable representing the company in external settings.
  • Comfortable working in a structured phone support environment as part of a rotating schedule.
  • CIP designation or working toward it is an asset.
