Job summary

DRS Pivotal Power Inc., located in Bedford, Nova Scotia, is seeking an Intermediate PCB Designer to join our team. You will design complex mixed-signal, multi-layer PCBs using Altium Designer and contribute to cost-effective, high-reliability power conversion equipment for mission-critical military applications.

Responsibilities include schematic entry, component library maintenance, layout optimization for EMI/thermal performance, and preparation of engineering documentation.

Qualifications

  • Engineering graduate from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 4+ years’ experience designing PWBs using Altium Designer or a comparable design program.
  • Analog and Digital Layout experience, especially with respect to high power electronics, is required.
  • Strong analytical and creativity capabilities.
  • A record of delivering cost effective and reliable designs within schedule and budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills.
  • Experience with packaging and/or mechanical design is an asset.
  • Past experience in the Defence industry would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with IPC and Military Standards as they apply to power conversion equipment.

Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, the Intermediate PCB Designer is responsible for the design of complex mixed-signal, multi-layer SMT and thru-hole printed circuit boards (PCBs) using Altium Designer.

As an Intermediate PCB Designer, your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Enter schematics into the design software, and create the required part library files when required
  • Layout and optimization of components and circuits to minimize design and production costs while adhering to appropriate design requirements
  • Efficiently layout components and circuits to minimize design and production costs while adhering to appropriate design requirements
  • Optimize layout to maximize performance (including reduced EMI and thermal management)

What you require to be successful in the role:
  • Engineering graduate of an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 4 plus years’ experience in the design and development of printed wiring boards (PWBs) using Altium Designer or a comparable design program
  • Analog and Digital Layout experience, especially with respect to high power electronics and modern component technologies, is required.
  • Strong analytical and creativity capabilities
  • A record of delivering cost effective and reliable designs within schedule and budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making ability
  • Ability to thrive in a product development team environment
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Previous experience designing switched-mode power supplies incorporating signal integrity, particularly Electromagnetic Interference mitigation strategies would be highly desirable
  • Experience with packaging and/or mechanical design would be an asset
  • Past experience in the Defence industry would also be an asset
  • Familiarity with both commercial (IPC) and Military Standards as they apply to power conversion equipment
