Job summary

Ultra Maritime – Canada is hiring an Intermediate or Senior Software Developer to design, code, test, and integrate software for advanced sonar processing subsystems. You will work across multiple shipboard environments, contribute to Agile teams, and support testing and release documentation.

The role requires 4–7 years of C++/Java experience, Linux familiarity, and strong SDLC knowledge. The position is not remote; candidates must be able to come into the Dartmouth office as needed.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • 4–7 years of C++ and/or Java experience.
  • Experience with Linux and command line.
  • Knowledge of SDLC, Agile methods and software testing.

Responsibilities

  • Design, code, test, integrate and configure software components.
  • Interface with sonar processing subsystems across shipboard environments.
  • Perform software integration, verification and defect resolution.
  • Support testing and documentation in Agile teams.
  • Mentor junior developers (Senior level).

Ultra Maritime has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate or Senior Software Developer to contribute to our rapidly expanding business. The candidate will be responsible for designing, coding, testing, integrating, building, and configuring software applications and interfacing with advanced sonar processing sub-systems deployed in multiple operating systems and within multiple shipboard environments. The role would suit a software developer with a keen interest in C++/Java, signal processing and a proven ability to develop software components as part of a wider complex product.

The expectation is for a contract term of 1 year, with the possibility of renewing or extending the contract.

NOTE: This position is not remote - candidates must be available to come into the office on-demand when requested to support testing activities.

Nationality Requirements

Candidates must be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearance required for the role, due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers.

Job Description

Scope:

The Intermediate or Senior Software Developer is responsible for designing, coding, testing, and integrating software components within custom-engineered systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Software component level and detailed design utilizing Unified Modelling Language (UML)
  • Software implementation and unit testing
  • Software integration, verification, and defect resolution
  • Contributing to software design, test, maintenance, and release documentation
  • Contributing to a team effort within an Agile development environment
  • Support the Software and System testing groups as required to conduct software and system integration testing

Required Skills/Experience (Intermediate Developer):

  • Degree level (or equivalent) in a related engineering discipline such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • 4-7 years of C++ and/or Java experience
  • Self-motivated, adaptable to change, proactive, diligent, and inter-personal skills
  • Knowledge of Software Engineering best practices, methodologies, processes, and tools, specifically the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Experience with Linux operating systems and comfortable working on the command line

Required Skills/Experience (Senior Developer):

  • 7+ years of C++ and\or Java experience
  • As above for an Intermediate developer
  • Experience providing mentorship and limited technical oversight of more junior team members

Desired Skills

  • Experience working on customized software solutions for government organizations (any level)
  • Good understanding of software configuration and build management
  • A good working understanding of Microsoft office applications: Word and Excel
  • Experience using software development and continuous integration tools (CI/CD) such as, but not limited to: Jira, Azure Devops, Jenkins, static code analysis tools

Wish List Skills

  • Sonar domain knowledge or similar signal processing intensive applications
  • Experience working with hardware and software emulators to conduct integration testing
  • Direct experience creating automated build pipelines in tools such as Jenkins or Azure Devops

Additional Requirements

  • The Candidate must be capable of acquiring a Canadian / NATO Secret security clearance and a Canadian Controlled Goods assessment to the satisfaction of the company
