Job description

As our Intermediate Mechanical Engineer, you’ll turn ideas into practical, production-ready designs. You’ll take a hands‑on role in designing and developing mechanical products, building and evaluating prototypes, and supporting testing from concept through production.

Working alongside experienced engineers and cross‑functional teams, you’ll solve technical challenges, refine designs based on testing and real‑world feedback, and contribute to increasingly complex projects. You’ll also share your technical knowledge with junior team members, provide day‑to‑day support, and help keep design, prototyping and testing activities moving forward.

WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW

At Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG), we design, engineer, and manufacture technology that solves real‑world transportation challenges, and we’re growing fast.

Over the past five years, that growth has enabled significant investment in our people, our capabilities, and our automotive systems business. These investments include a new state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing facility, which we will move into in May 2027, along with enhanced R&D equipment, tooling, technology, and infrastructure that strengthen our engineering capabilities and accelerate product innovation.

We’re building more here – more capability, more technology, and more opportunity. And we’re looking for people who want to work in a collaborative and fun environment to fuel our next wave of innovation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Take responsibility for defined mechanical design assignments for products, components, and assemblies, with guidance on more complex work.
  • Create and refine 3D models, assemblies, production drawings, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Apply product requirements, GD&T, and design‑for‑manufacturing principles to develop practical, production‑ready designs.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes, support verification and validation testing, and use results to recommend design improvements.
  • Coordinate defined onsite and longer‑term testing activities, documenting results and communicating technical findings.
  • Troubleshoot design and product issues, investigate root causes, and contribute practical solutions.
  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to resolve design and production issues and support product transition into manufacturing.
  • Contribute to design reviews and provide day‑to‑day technical support to junior team members.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • A practical, hands‑on approach to mechanical design and a natural curiosity for understanding how products work and how they can be improved.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to work through technical challenges, evaluate options, and recognize when additional technical direction is needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in designs, drawings, documentation, and testing.
  • Hands‑on experience building and evaluating prototypes and supporting mechanical testing, verification, and validation activities.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering and manufacturing teams and provide day‑to‑day support to junior team members.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, product development, or engineering technology.
  • Registration or eligibility for the appropriate professional engineering or technologist designation in Manitoba.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable CAD software, including experience with 3D modelling, assemblies, simulation and production drawings.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, engineering drawings, design‑for‑manufacturing principles, and controlled design‑release processes. Experience with vibration, load or optics analysis is an asset.
