Job Summary

Intermediate Instrumentation Specialists specify Instrumentation for a wide variety of applications, create datasheets, request quotes, and generate bill of materials (BOM). This position provides technical support to Instrumentation peers, Engineers, and Drafters. Senior Instrumentation Specialists are involved in sizing and selecting various instruments and preparing instrument lists and datasheets. This position has experience with control systems, control valve sizing, measurement instrumentation, and industry regulations and standards. Senior Instrumentation Specialists are involved in bid reviews, design reviews, technical evaluations, and assisting field operations. They are often called upon to lead projects where there are various other Instrumentation Specialists along with other disciplines involved in various degrees.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with Instrument engineering and design for industrial plants and processes.
  • Assists peers, engineers and others with instrumentation questions.
  • Has an understanding of PLCs, HMIs, RTUs, and DCS/SCADA systems and their use in the oil and gas industry.
  • Reads and analyzes P&IDs and Line Lists for generation of instrument lists and data sheets.
  • Read and understand process runs and apply to the specification of instruments.
  • Checks Instrumentation Specialist’s and Process Engineer’s data sheets for accuracy, proper application, and completeness.
  • Uses data sheets and associated information to specify, size and select instruments.
  • Review/Modify P&IDs, Cause and Effects, and Shutdown Keys.
  • Read and apply specifications, installation detail drawings, and electrical drawings to the specification of instrumentation.
  • Ensure designs and installations comply with client specifications and government standards and codes.
  • Performs bid/evaluate/award process including development of Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages, bid evaluations, and Bill of Material (BOM) entry into Enterprise Resource Planning software.
  • Possibly test, calibrate, and troubleshoot electrical equipment and Instrumentation.
  • Resolve instrument, control, and electrical technical issues.
  • Reviews and approves vendor drawings and documents.
  • View instruments and installations in the yard or shop and advise on proper installation.
  • Assist instrument and control personnel during construction and commissioning.
  • Tracks time to jobs.
  • Ensures final project documentation is accurate, complete, and in a professional format for presentation to the client.
  • Independently analyze complex problems by communicating with leaders, other Instrumentation peers, and other disciplines.
  • Provide technical support to Instrumentation peers, Engineers, Drafters, and others.
  • Works with other engineers to create control philosophies for oil and gas equipment.
  • Apply practical knowledge and develop broad based skills while contributing to the overall success of Propak’s operations through interaction with a cross functional team.
  • Assists with system architecture design.
  • Assists Instrumentation Supervisor in refining standards.
  • Lead a project with providing manhour estimates and overall project timeline management.
  • Assign and oversee the work of other Instrumentation Specialists in team.
  • Assist with the performance evaluation of other Instrumentation Specialists in team.
Prerequisites
Education
  • Diploma in Instrumentation or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Journeyman Red Seal certification (Instrumentation) is an asset
  • Registered with or eligible for ASET certification
Experience
  • 5+ years of directly related experience in the field of instrumentation in the oil and gas or petrochemical industry
  • P&ID’s, datasheets and Instrument Index experience is required
  • Previous experience in a fabrication environment is an asset
  • Experience with an EPCM company is an asset
  • Experience with control systems, measurement instrumentation, and industry regulations
  • Experience with Analyzer Design an Asset
  • Calibrating and testing instrumentation is an asset
  • Design, installation, and operation of gas processing equipment including natural gas compression, refrigeration, turbo-expander, or amine treating plants is an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Windows XP, AutoCAD Drawing Viewer, Bluebeam &/or Adobe Acrobat Reader, Units Converter, and various Flow Calculation Software
  • Experience with Rockwell or DeltaV an Asset
Other
  • Proficiency in Unit Conversions, Fisher Valve Specification Software, Emerson Regulator & Relief Valve Sizing Software and Emerson Online Meter Sizing & Selection Tools.

Work Environment
Specific Work Conditions
  • Work may involve shop/warehouse reviews and field placements, often with little notice

  • Must wear company-standard PPE when entering fabrication shops, yards, and project sites. Project site PPE includes CSA approved steel toed boots and long pants
