Qualifications

Intermediate Health and Safety Leader (2025042561)

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Health and Safety Leader to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor compliance of workers and subcontractors in accordance with Thurber’s Health Safety Management System (HSMS);
  • Conduct branch and work site inspections and institute corrective action plans as required.
  • Participate in the Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings.
  • Lead monthly safety meetings and address employees concerns/questions on health and safety matters.
  • Review safety documents for HSMS compliance and ensure appropriate measures are established and utilized to encourage and facilitate injury and illness prevention.
  • Promote a culture of workplace safety, where safety is everyone’s responsibility and provide coaching as needed and recommend corrective action when appropriate.
  • Following Thurber’s procedures complete incident investigations, and file required documentation.
  • Report incidents to the Branch Manager and Corporate Health and Safety Leader.
  • Maintain and report monthly safety statistics to corporate safety.
  • Follow up on and track corrective actions stemming from incident investigations, audits, inspections and other hazard reports.
  • Keep branch management current on the status of any issue(s) that may impact the work being performed.
  • Ensure safety data sheets (SDS) are current for the branch and accessible to all employees.
  • Administer WCB claims process with Calgary employees and administrate loss claims management, modified work program and Thurber’s return to work program.
  • Review and share current and relevant OHS news and documentation.
  • Provide advice relating to compliance with Federal or Provincial OHS regulations.
  • Work with our Corporate Health & Safety Leader to develop, implement and monitor company’s HSMS including Health and Safety Policies, Programs, and Work Procedures.
  • Work with our Corporate Health and Safety Leader to develop, review, and update appropriate sections of Thurber’s HSMS and its documents.
  • Conduct specific health and safety orientations for all new branch workers and visitors.
  • Record, file and update employee training and certifications.
  • Prepare site specific health and safety plans to include Prime Contractors project work.
  • Coordinating with project leadership, conduct project specific hazard assessments, KPI and other project safety related activities, as required.
  • Assist in responses to client requests and concerns regarding health & safety.

Qualifications and Assets

  • Qualified as any of the following:

National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)
Construction Safety Officer (CSO)
Construction Health & Safety Officer (CHSO)
Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC)
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a construction safety officer in Commercial, Industrial or Engineering environments.
  • Related post-secondary education or technical training in a related field is an asset.
  • Proficient computer skills, including proficiency with Excel, Word, Adobe, and Outlook.
  • Superior interpersonal abilities and the ability to get along with diverse personalities.
  • Someone who is tactful, mature, and flexible.
  • Strong communication and training skills including the ability to speak in front of large groups.
  • Good note-taking and documentation skills.
  • Full understanding of the provincial (Alberta) OH&S Act, Regulation and Code.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to coach and influence others.

Base Salary Range

  • $80,000 - $100,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
  • The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
  • The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
  • Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
