Job summary

Tetra Tech in Vancouver, BC is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical Engineering team. You will work on foundation design and geotechnical analysis in seismic environments, with mentoring from senior engineers.

The role requires a BC-registered or eligible Professional Engineer, 5–8 years of geotechnical experience, and strong communication skills. We offer a hybrid work model and opportunities to travel across Western Canada.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5–8 years of relevant geotechnical engineering and foundation design experience.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
  • Experience with seismic design, soft ground conditions, geotechnical reconnaissance, and site characterization.
  • Experience supporting geotechnical explorations, field programs, and site assessments.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports, letters, calculations, and other project documentation with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles and site development.
  • Experience with engineering design and analysis software.
  • Interest in proposals, client communication, and business development activities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a consulting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop practical technical solutions for geotechnical applications, including foundation design in seismic environments.
  • Prepare technical letters, reports, proposals, calculations, and project documents with senior staff guidance.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior staff and co-op students.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination to deliver on time.
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, and subconsultants throughout project delivery.
  • Plan field programs, site explorations, testing, and data collection.
  • Analyze geotechnical information and prepare evaluation reports and site guidance.
  • Review junior staff work for quality and consistency.
  • Participate in civil earthwork and infrastructure design and construction specs.
  • Contribute to design of pipelines, water mains, highways, and bridge foundations.
  • Assist with geohazard assessments and risk mapping.
  • Apply engineering judgment to identify risks and propose practical solutions.
  • Coordinate with project teams to support field activities and address issues.

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $120,000 per annum. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.

Your Role:
  • Developing and applying practical technical solutions for a range of geotechnical applications, including foundation design in seismically active environments.
  • Preparing technical letters, reports, proposals, calculations, and other project documentation with guidance from senior technical staff.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to junior staff and co-op students, as appropriate.
  • Supporting project planning, resource coordination, scheduling, and budget management to help deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Communicating and coordinating with coworkers, clients, contractors, and subconsultants throughout project delivery.
  • Planning and coordinating field programs, including site explorations, field observations, testing, and data collection.
  • Analyzing geotechnical information and preparing geotechnical evaluation reports, recommendations, and site-development guidance.
  • Reviewing technical work prepared by junior staff and providing feedback to support quality and consistency.
  • Participating in the design of civil earthwork structures and assisting with the preparation of construction specifications.
  • Participating in the design of linear infrastructure, including pipelines, water mains, transmission lines, highways, and bridge foundations.
  • Contributing to the design and assessment of marine and port infrastructure, hospitals, community centres, commercial buildings, residential towers, and other developments.
  • Participating in geohazard assessments, including terrain mapping, hazard mapping, and risk assessments.
  • Applying engineering judgment to identify potential geotechnical risks and recommending practical solutions under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Coordinating with project teams to support construction activities, respond to technical questions, and address field-related geotechnical issues.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Approximately 5–8 years of relevant geotechnical engineering and foundation design experience.
  • Experience with seismic design, soft ground conditions, geotechnical reconnaissance, and site characterization is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating geotechnical explorations, field programs, and site assessments.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports, letters, calculations, and other project documentation with guidance from senior engineers.
  • A solid understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, including soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and site development.
  • Experience with engineering design and analysis software.
  • An interest in proposal preparation, client communication, and contributing to business development activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a consulting environment and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Western Canada and participate in field assignments that may last up to three or four weeks at a time.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
