Job description

DWB Consulting Services Ltd is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Intermediate Fisheries Biologist to lead and support fisheries-focused projects in British Columbia. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in aquatic biology and environmental consulting, with a passion for fieldwork and fostering positive environmental outcomes.

This position involves a combination of office work and fieldwork, with travel expected for field assignments. The primary office location is in Fort St. John, BC though the role may also require providing support to other office locations. The applicant must live in, or be willing to relocate, to Fort St. John (a Crew house is available for temporary or full time stays).

Compensation:Compensation is dependent on experience level with expected range of $32 - $41 per hour plus overtime, travel, professional dues, benefits, vacation pay, RRSP program and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide biological technical support to facilitate upstream fish passage
  • Fish processing (including sample collection and PIT tag implantation)
  • Fish species identification and health assessments
  • Otter and beaver management
  • Operation of the Upstream Fishway facility
  • Water quality management
  • Additional duties outside of the primary operations season (April to November) will include the below items.

Fish Biology Expertise:

  • Assist in conducting fish-focused works, including fish population studies and health assessments, and monitoring of aquatic ecosystem health.
  • Support the development and execution of field studies, ensuring data collection is accurate and thorough.
  • Collaborate with senior biologists and environmental specialists.

Fieldwork and Data Collection:

  • Conduct field assessments in various environments, surveying fish species, aquatic habitats, water quality, and riparian zones, under the supervision of senior staff.
  • Assist in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of field data related to fish populations, habitat conditions, and surrounding ecosystems.
  • Help monitor and assess the potential impacts of proposed developments on fish species, particularly in relation to construction and industrial activities.

Project Management and Reporting:

  • Assist in the preparation and review of proposals, study designs, cost estimates, and technical reports related to fish biology and environmental impact assessments.
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports on fish species, habitat health, and aquatic biodiversity.
  • Ensure data quality and integrity, and assist in presenting findings clearly to clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build positive relationships with clients, regulatory bodies, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution and adherence to environmental guidelines.
  • Participate in discussions on fish and aquatic ecosystem health, helping to ensure that stakeholders are informed and involved in the process.

Mentorship and Training:

  • Assist in mentoring junior team members by providing guidance on field data collection and environmental impact assessment techniques.
  • Promote a culture of excellence in environmental stewardship and fish conservation practices within the team.

Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Fish Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Professional designation as a Biologist (RPBio or a P.Biol) is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in fish biology or aquatic ecology.
  • Experience conducting environmental impact assessments (EIA), particularly related to fish species, aquatic habitats, and water quality.
  • Proven track record in managing fish biology projects and leading field studies.
  • Expertise in working with regulatory agencies and stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Experience in Indigenous consultation and engagement on environmental projects.

Skills:

  • Excellent report writing and technical documentation skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS, and data analysis software.
  • Experience with fish survey techniques, including electrofishing, habitat assessments, and fish tagging.
  • Ability to manage and organize fieldwork in remote, challenging environments.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills.

Additional Skills and Assets:

  • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation related to fish and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with fish conservation and restoration techniques.
