The Opportunity

McElhanney Ltd. is seeking an Intermediate Environmental Engineer / Scientist to join our Langley, BC office. The successful candidate will be an important member of our local environmental team and will primarily support contaminated sites investigation and assessment work. This role may also involve monitoring activities for construction site environmental management and erosion and sediment control. The ideal candidate will have a desire to learn and advance their career toward project management, demonstrating increased autonomy and responsibility over time.

This role is designated as a safety-sensitive position and requires completion of pre-employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Completion of all stages of environmental site assessments (Phase I/II/III ESAs or Stage1/2 PSIs), including proposal preparation, field planning and execution, data collection and interpretation, report writing, and remediation recommendations.
  • Participation in planning and executing environmental projects and field programs such as monitoring, erosion and sediment control, groundwater and surface water monitoring, soil and sediment sampling, vapour sampling, etc.
  • Preparing and following site-specific health and safety plans.
  • Coordinating and supervising subcontractors for ground disturbance, utility location, borehole drilling, well installation, and test pit excavation.
  • Providing environmental advice and solutions to guide design and planning.
  • Supporting other departments (survey, geotechnical, transportation, civil engineering) to develop a holistic approach to project execution.

What You’ll Bring

  • 2-4 years of relevant experience with a degree in Environmental Engineering, Science, or related field.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a professional engineer or geologist in BC.
  • Knowledge of BC Contaminated Sites Regulation and protocols, with proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with proposal writing, site assessments, permitting, and reporting.
  • Experience with soil, groundwater, surface water, vapour, and air sampling.
  • Strong project management skills; leadership experience is an asset.

While primarily based in the Lower Mainland, some travel may be required to support projects in other regions.
