Job description

Job Description Overview

AtkinsRéalis is expanding our Hydropower team in Ontario to support a series of nation‑building projects and hydropower refurbishments that help keep Canada’s electrical grid reliable for decades to come. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will develop design packages for hydroelectric balance‑of‑plant systems including high/medium/ low voltage systems, and support project delivery from conceptual design through construction support and commissioning as required. This role is based out of our Toronto (West Mall) office and offers a hybrid working environment, with occasional travel to project sites as required.

Your role: Prepare conceptual and detailed designs for hydroelectric Balance of Plant (BoP) electrical systems, including medium and high voltage systems, station service AC/DC distribution systems, motor controls, grounding systems, MV/LV cable systems, cable tray systems, and associated equipment layouts. Perform, coordinate, and review electrical engineering studies including protection coordination, short circuit, load flow, grounding, and arc flash analyses using ETAP (or equivalent), and document study results. Develop technical specifications and design packages for major electrical equipment including MV switchgear, generator circuit breakers, LV station service equipment, generator step‑up transformers, isolated‑phase bus (IPB), and high‑voltage AIS/GIS systems. Prepare engineering drawings and documentation including single line diagrams, relay and metering one‑lines, AC three‑line diagrams, elementary schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials, cable schedules, and related design deliverables. Coordinate instrumentation and control interfaces and support electrical deliverables for auxiliary plant systems such as lighting, fire alarm, security/access control, HVAC electrical interfaces, and other building services. Support project delivery activities including estimating, proposal development, conceptual design studies, field reviews, RFIs, contractor coordination, commissioning support, and timely resolution of site issues. Maintain complete project documentation and ensure compliance with AtkinsRéalis Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control requirements throughout all phases of project execution.

About you

University degree in Electrical Engineering and Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation. 7-15 years experience in electrical design within the power generation and/or utility/ or industrial sectors, and hydropower experience considered an asset. Working knowledge of applicable North American electrical codes and standards, including CSA, IEEE, and ANSI. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit is considered an asset. Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and willingness to work in a hybrid environment with occasional travel to project sites as required.
