Job summary

A leading engineering firm is searching for an Intermediate Designer to join their Transportation Group in Ontario. The candidate will be integral in delivering complex transport projects involving roads and multi-modal infrastructure. They will engage in mentoring junior staff and leading design efforts in a collaborative environment. Successful applicants will possess a degree in Civil Engineering and relevant experience in highway and corridor design.

Who are we looking for?

Our EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is looking for an Intermediate Designer who is ready to join our growing Canadian Operations within the Transportation Group. This role can be based out of one of our Southern Ontario offices : Whitby, Waterloo, Mississauga, Markham, Kingston or St. Catharines.

The Transportation Group within GHD Canada works with Provincial, Regional, and local municipal transportation agencies, as well as select contracting partners, on large scale projects across the whole Transportation spectrum of highways, roads and bridges, transit and multi-modal infrastructure, and transportation planning. Our team provides integrated transportation services throughout the project lifecycle from initial policy, transportation economics and business case advice, through concept, environmental assessment, detailed design, construction administration and asset management support services.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in :

  • Successful participation in, and completion of roadway, highway and freeway projects, and / or multi-modal corridors including median LRT / BRT under direction of senior staff
  • Producing design work in an integrated 3D environment that focuses on quality and meets or exceeds company and industry quality standards
  • Applying technical knowledge and coordination skills to solve problems on complex multi-disciplinary projects
  • Potential for acting as a technical lead or lead drafter for a defined scope of work
  • Potential for contact and coordination with sub-disciplines and external agencies
  • Supervising the performance of more junior team members

Candidates’ career paths :

  • This role is intended for Intermediate Road Systems & Highway Designers looking to continue their careers in the design of Highways / Freeways and Multi-modal Corridors (LRT, BRT) for municipalities, MTO and major transportation partners
  • This role is also suitable for an experienced Junior Designer who is looking to advance their career to become an Intermediate Road Systems Design & Highway Design, and who embraces the new technologies and software in modern engineering design delivery

Candidates’ career experiences may consist of :

  • Design experience in the production of conceptual and detailed design models and related drawing sets for a wide range of transportation projects, including roads, highways, freeways and multi-modal systems
  • Working as a team, receiving mentorship and guidance from Senior staff, and providing mentorship and supervision and oversight of Junior staff
  • Large and small team collaboration. Communication with other disciplines (bridges, electrical, geotechnical, sub-consultants, municipalities, utility companies, other partners and clients
  • Experience and working knowledge of corridors modelling with InRoads / OpenRoads and / or Civil 3D
  • Good understanding of geometric design principles (. TAC Geometric Guidelines), Ontario design standards (. OPSS), roadside safety design, and client specific standards and requirements (. MTO)
  • Experience in design delivery within both conventional and design-build project models are considered assets
  • Exposure or desire to learn using visualization software platforms (Infraworks, and design programming (Dynamo are considered assets but not required

What you will bring to the team :

  • 3 - 8 years' experience in road systems and / or highway design
  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering
  • MTO and / or Metrolinx experience is an asset but not required
  • Interest or experience with new design tools and technologies such as BIM platforms, design programming, visualizations and automation are considered assets
  • Experience with Construction Administration & Inspection are considered assets
