Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Construction Materials Engineer to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.

As our Intermediate Construction Materials Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute condition assessments, rehabilitation, and repair of existing infrastructure, including formulation of repair strategies for bridge structures, parkades, industrial facilities, and other structures;
  • Mass concrete thermal mitigation design;
  • Non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete;
  • Service life and durability evaluation;
  • Manage the design and review of conventional and specialty concrete mixes;
  • Provide engineering and technical support for Quality Control (QC) and/or Quality Assurance (QA) testing and inspection services;
  • Manage and carry out field monitoring of construction works;
  • Prepare technical reports, including technical specifications, design reports, and writing proposals;
  • Work closely with our Field and Laboratory team to review analyses and reporting of laboratory and field testing of materials;
  • Supervise and mentor technicians and junior engineers;
  • Managing project schedules and budgets;
  • Progressive interaction with clients; and,
  • Travelling to local, and remote construction sites.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a related post-secondary program in Civil or Materials Engineering with a heavy focus on construction materials (i.e. concrete, asphalt, aggregates, etc.);
  • Experience in the field of construction materials testing is an asset;
  • Experience on construction sites is an asset;
  • A post-graduate degree (master’s degree or higher) would be an asset;
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license is required;
  • Strong organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills;
  • Flexible schedule, with the ability to work overtime and/or weekends as required; and,
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
