Job description

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an Intermediate Code Consultant – Fire Protection to join our growing national fire protection practice. This is an opportunity to build your career on complex, meaningful infrastructure projects across Canada while developing practical expertise in building code, fire code, life safety, and firestopping compliance.

In this role, you will support regulated and technically challenging projects in sectors such as nuclear, defence, rail, industrial, and other high-reliability environments. Working alongside experienced fire protection engineers and code specialists, you will help develop clear, practical, and defensible code-based solutions for clients and project teams. This is a client-facing position suited to someone who enjoys technical problem solving, clear communication, and collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams.

You will have the opportunity to grow through mentorship, exposure to major national projects, and hands-on involvement throughout design and construction. Experience with nuclear codes and standards is an asset, but curiosity, strong fundamentals, and a willingness to learn are equally important.

Your role
  • Provide building code, fire code, and life safety consulting services under the guidance of senior technical staff.
  • Prepare code reports, fire and life safety strategies, technical memoranda, design narratives, and other project documentation.
  • Review drawings and specifications for compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Participate in construction-phase services, including site reviews, field observations, and resolution of deficiencies related to firestopping and life safety features.
  • Coordinate with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and project management teams to help resolve code-related issues.
  • Communicate with clients, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), contractors, and third-party reviewers in a clear and professional manner.
  • Support project scoping, proposals, and business development activities as your experience grows.
  • Contribute to internal technical tools, templates, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Stay current with relevant building codes, fire codes, referenced standards, and emerging industry practices.
About you
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, Building Science, or a related discipline.
  • Registered as an Engineer‑in‑Training, Certified Engineering Technologist, or eligible for future professional registration is an asset.
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in fire protection engineering, building code consulting, fire and life safety consulting, or a related design/construction environment.
  • Working knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada, National Fire Code of Canada, applicable provincial codes, and referenced CAN/ULC, NFPA, and CSA standards.
  • Knowledge of nuclear codes and standards, UL Solutions Integrated System Testing Certification for CAN/ULC‑S1001, eligibility for federal security clearance, a valid driver's license, and willingness to travel are considered assets or requirements depending on project needs.
  • Understanding of life safety principles, including fire‑resistance ratings, spatial separation, means of egress, occupancy classification, fire alarm and sprinkler system interfaces, and firestopping systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings, and prepare clear technical reports, code summaries, meeting notes, and formal correspondence.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative, organized, and detail‑oriented approach to managing multiple project priorities.
