What you will do

The Intermediate Claims Adjuster for Casualty handles various types of mainstream commercial casualty claims (e.g., slip and falls, product liability, and other general liability) in accordance with operational / Best Practices guidelines. This includes determining coverage, drafting reservation of rights and denial letters, attendance at mediation / settlement conferences, and instructing independent adjusters and attorneys in negotiation and settlement of claims. Claims are primarily in Canadian venues with limited worldwide exposures.

Responsibilities
  • Review casualty claims in conjunction with policy wordings to determine coverage.
  • Provide direction to adjusters on investigation of claims.
  • Prepare disclaimer and/or reservation of rights letters and communicate with underwriters, brokers, and insureds when applicable.
  • Provide instruction to legal counsel to bring about appropriate resolution of claim.
  • Ensure compliance by legal counsel with litigation guidelines.
  • Participate in mediation/ADR process to bring about resolution of claim.
  • Negotiate settlements directly where possible.
  • Issue payments within appropriate time frame.
  • Operate within best practices guidelines including timely reserve reviews, notes, payment requests, and electronic diary.
  • Inform management of all complaints, large losses, coverage issues, etc.
What you need to know / What you bring
  • Minimum 3 years handling commercial casualty claims.
  • College/University degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Ability to make decisions and give directions to adjusters and/or counsel.
  • Quick learner with strong communication and negotiating skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient computer skills to navigate paperless claim file system.
  • Travel: Approximately 10% to attend mediations/ADR.
  • Ready to take your career to the next level.
Languages and credentials (French/English)
  • Bilingual (French and English, written and spoken).
  • Certification AMF in progress (for claims settlement in property and casualty).
  • Experience handling complex commercial claims and knowledge of excess insurance policies.
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience; PAA designation is a plus.
  • Ability to make decisions and convey directives to lawyers, independent adjusters, and other professionals.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
Travel and work arrangement

In-person collaboration is valued; team members are primarily in the office to support effective teamwork and client service.
