Job description

Our client, one of Canada’s oldest geotechnical engineering consulting firms, is seeking an Intermediate Building Science/Building Envelope Engineer out of their Sudbury office. This is a full time, permanent position with a salary range of 75-100k, depending on experience, along with a competitive overall compensation package.

The client base includes major developers, building owners, property management firms, condominium properties, and many other public and private housing and commercial building groups. You will be part of an engaging team of engineers and technologists working on exciting and challenging projects in a culture of mentorship, continuous learning and collaboration.

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Intermediate Building Science/Building Envelope Engineer possessing 5+ years of experience to join our growing team in Northern Ontario. The reward is a competitive salary (reviewed annually) and benefits package. Duties and responsibilities for this position will include:

  • Lead and oversee the design, analysis, and implementation of various building science engineering projects for new and post-construction restoration projects.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers to integrate building science principles into the design process for various types of residential and commercial construction projects.
  • Oversee on-site visual and destructive investigations or performance testing of building envelope components to produce technical engineering reports.
  • Consultation and review of technical reports and project specifications prepared by junior engineers and technologists for various building envelope related projects, assessments, and investigations.
  • Oversee Field inspection and reporting for various building envelope related construction projects.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in building science, green building technologies, and building code standards.
  • Prepare engineering proposals for building science related projects and liaise with clients.
  • Technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technologists.
  • Various other miscellaneous duties and responsibilities.

The ideal candidate for this dynamic and challenging role should have the following qualifications:

  • Completion of a degree in an engineering program with a focus on Building Science, Architectural, Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering work experience, with a focus on projects related to the field of building science.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, construction, and contract legislation.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and communicate effectively with clients, contractors, engineers, architects, and co-workers.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills, for concurrent handling of multiple in-progress projects.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Detail oriented with good critical/analytical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  • Possess a valid Ontario driver’s license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
  • Thermography level 1,2 or 3 certification would be considered an asset.

Physical Requirements

Field work may include climbing ladders, performing inspections at higher elevations (including swing stages, with proper training) and exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to occasionally lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
