Intermediate Accountant

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Division Controller for Doman Timber, the Intermediate Accountant is responsible for the regular monthly accounting, payroll entries, financial analyses, and forecasts for the Timber Division, including liaising with the operations and corporate accounting on a variety of financial and accounting matters. As part of the Doman Timber finance team, the Intermediate Accountant also provides backup to the Division Controller.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Prepare and maintain fixed asset and prepaid expense schedules, including monthly amortizations
  • Record journal entries for property tax expenses, claim settlements, FX gain/loss estimations, and deferred revenue recognition
  • Manage all accounting for prepaids, inventory, and payroll within the division
  • Perform bank-related functions including transfers (CAD/USD), charges, and reconciliations
  • Support intercompany and external sales processes, including invoicing and revenue recognition
  • Prepare accruals for professional fees, utilities, supplies, and other operating expenses
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and quarterly
  • Prepare elimination entries for consolidated reporting
  • Conduct sales and margin analysis as required
  • Assist with GST/PST returns, cash forecasting, and BBC reporting
  • Provide documentation and support for internal and external audits
  • Complete external reporting requirements (e.g., lenders, Statistics Canada)
  • Contribute to monthly and annual financial reporting, including variance analysis across multiple legal entities
  • Collaborate with corporate accounting and internal audit teams as needed
  • Participate in other accounting activities and projects as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Advanced Excel skills (e.g., VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, PivotTables)
  • Experience with ERP systems (JD Edwards preferred)
  • Familiarity with multi-entity, intercompany, and multi-currency environments
  • Industry experience in forestry or manufacturing is an asset
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate across departments

EDUCATION

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting or Finance (required)
  • CPA designation or working toward CPA (preferred)

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • The typical hiring range for this position is $60,000 - $74,000 annually. The base pay offered is based on geographical location and may vary depending on the applicant’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity. Similar positions located in other geographical locations may not necessarily receive the same salary range. The compensation information is an estimate and provided to meet with applicable provincial Pay Transparency legislation.
