Interim Vice President of Finance

Reports to : Chief Executive Officer

Duration : 3 - 6 months

Location : Toronto, ON

Remote (Occasional Onsite)

Our client, a well-regarded Canadian charitable organization, is seeking a seasoned finance professional to assess and elevate the finance function whilst engaging and inspiring the current team through a transition. This is an exciting mandate for a seasoned hands-on leader who loves driving change and making an impact. This interim executive will play a critical role in stabilizing a small finance team, driving strategic oversight, and guiding the organization through its upcoming budgeting cycle and finance system modernization. This senior leader will also ensure the organization is compliant with all relevant policies, maintains efficient and effective financial systems and processes, high service levels and accountability across its core functions.

Key Responsibilities :

  • As part of the executive leadership team, provide strategic financial oversight and advice.
  • Work collaborative with the executive team to ensure the organization meets its strategic objectives.
  • Lead the finance team through a transitional period, providing stability, mentorship, and operational direction.
  • Elevate the strategic value of the finance department to the organization.
  • Assess the people, policies, processes, and procedures, providing key insights to the CEO.
  • Ensures fiscal management reporting processes are in place to support the ongoing and future needs of the organization.
  • Provides regular (monthly, year-to-date, etc.) reporting and analysis, including key metrics reports, and conducts ad hoc financial analysis as required to assess performance.
  • Ensure quality control with respect to monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting activities, processes, and procedures.
  • Guide the organization through the upcoming budgeting cycle, ensuring alignment with operational goals.
  • Represent the finance function at executive leadership meetings and board-level committees.
  • Oversee financial reporting and forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll regulations and government filings.
  • Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and reporting frameworks.
  • Mentor finance staff, fostering professional growth, engagement, and confidence.

Competencies and Requirements :

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in finance leadership.
  • Experience in not-for-profit organizations, government agency or community service organizations.
  • Experience leading complex budgeting cycles.
  • Ideally experience in campaign financial projections and reporting.
  • Capacity to think both strategically and tactically.
  • Strong interpersonal and coaching skills, with a collaborative leadership style.
  • Ability to navigate change and support a maturing team through transformation.
  • Post-secondary degrees in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
