Position Overview
Reporting to the Board of Directors, theInterim Executive Director (ED)provides strategic leadership and overall management of the organization, ensuring alignment with its mission, values, and strategic goals. The ED oversees operational excellence, regulatory compliance, financial sustainability, and high-quality service delivery in a hospice care environment.
As the organization’s senior leader, the ED fosters a collaborative culture among staff, volunteers, and community partners. They serve as the primary liaison to Alberta Health Services (AHS), regulatory bodies, donors, and external stakeholders while strengthening community engagement and maintaining the organization’s positive public profile.
Key Responsibilities
Governance & Strategic Leadership
- Serve as chief executive liaison to the Board, ensuring transparent communication, strategic alignment, and informed decision-making.
- Lead the development and execution of operational policies and strategic plans.
- Provide regular reports and insights on performance, risks, and sector trends.
Operations, Risk & Quality Management
- Direct and delegate day-to-day operations, ensuring safe, high-quality care and services.
- Oversee risk management frameworks, enterprise risk assessments, and mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with Accreditation Canada, AHS, Continuing Care Standards, and privacy legislation.
Human Resources
- Lead all HR functions: recruitment, coaching, performance management, succession planning, and employee relations.
- Promote a positive, team-oriented workplace culture that supports continuous improvement and collaboration.
- Supervise a multidisciplinary leadership team, including but not limited to the Medical Director, Clinical Manager, and HR Advisor.
Financial & Asset Management
- Develop and manage the annual operating budget and strategic financial plans.
- Oversee grant writing, funding proposals, and donor stewardship in collaboration with the Board.
- Ensure fiscal accountability, financial reporting, and alignment with regulatory standards.
Community Engagement & External Relations
- Act as the public face of the organization, strengthening relationships with community stakeholders, donors, and health authorities.
- Represent the organization at regional and provincial levels, enhancing visibility and advocacy for hospice care.
- Support fundraising and marketing strategies to ensure long-term sustainability.
Programs & Service Delivery
- Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in line with organizational goals and legislative requirements.
- Drive innovation and continuous quality improvement in care delivery.
- Ensure resident, family, staff, and volunteer satisfaction remains a key performance metric.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare, Business, Finance, or related field preferred; Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation an asset.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, palliative care, or non-profit organizations.
- Demonstrated success managing multidisciplinary teams and complex operations.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of healthcare systems, HR best practices, risk mitigation, and financial oversight.
- Proven ability to lead organizational change, build community partnerships, and navigate regulatory environments.
- Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Technologically proficient with experience in office productivity software.
