Interim Director, Laboratory Services

Duration: 4-5 months

Reports: Vice President of Clinical Services

Location: Northern Ontario

Our client, a health authority located in the beautiful north, is looking for an experienced professional to join their team to add critical expertise and capacity as they prepare for an accreditation. In this assignment you will challenge current processes and bring new ideas and approaches to help create a progressive strategy that will lift the value and service levels of the laboratory functions. The key area of responsibility is overseeing the Lab Quality Management System at all sites and evolving the approach to laboratory policy and resources. This is a fantastic assignment for an experienced professional who loves a challenge and coaching talent through change.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Accountable for continuous analysis and reporting on initiatives to improve both the effectiveness and efficiency of services.
  • Assess the people, policies, processes, and technologies providing key insights to the VP.
  • Oversees, manages, and ensures compliance with regards to the Quality Control and Quality Management systems for the Laboratory and prepares reports demonstrating such compliance.
  • Plan, implement, and administer any changes necessary to re-organize the operational management of the departments.
  • Establish standards of practice, departmental policies, and procedures in accordance with legislative guidelines and hospital policies for both the laboratory and diagnostic imaging programs.
  • Ensure effective processes for selection and procurement of equipment and technology.
  • Oversees compliance with both Federal and Provincial legislative requirements.
  • Prepare monthly board reports identify and reporting on quality initiatives.
  • Ensure services and personnel are compliant with all relevant international, federal, provincial, and professional standards, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable laws, through the development, teaching and monitoring of appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Establish and ensure quality indicators are developed, implemented, evaluated, and reported.

Education and Experience:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in a relevant field required.
  • Post-graduate continuing education in management skills (e.g., financial management, conflict resolution, decision making) are required.
  • Member of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), required
  • 5+ years of clinical/healthcare experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Standards of Practice as outlined by College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrated personal time management/project prioritization skills.
  • Proven mentoring and coaching skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem recognition and problem-solving skills.
  • Systems lateral thinking - can work well across hospitals, hospital programs, service modalities/disciplines, clinical departments and regionally.
  • Demonstrated skills in strategic/operations planning and management.
