Job summary

University of Guelph is seeking a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Fall 2026 Interdisciplinary Design Lab (IDL) in the School of Fine Art and Music. The role involves hands-on support, instruction, and collaboration with the IDL manager on projects using modern manufacturing and digital tools, including VR and 3D printing/scanning.

The candidate should have graduate-level training in Studio Art and may be enrolled in MFA.SART.

Qualifications

Other Duties Described:

This position involves investigating the use of modern manufacturing and digital tools in the fine arts. The GSA will work closely with the IDL manager. Some of the technologies will include virtual reality, 3D printing, 3D scanning, and potentially using various software packages. Other tasks will possibly involve assisting in mold making, sculpting plasticine, painting, sanding/finishing objects, researching new technologies, and helping with assembling/manufacturing larger projects. The tasks and projects will change during the semester. The GSA is expected to be available in person on campus multiple times per week. An enthusiasm to learn about new technologies and being comfortable figuring out new computer programs is an asset. Much of the work is hands on and being comfortable with using sculpting tools, mold making, and general knowledge about "making things" will be a good foundation for the work that will be done.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants are required to have graduate level training and a working knowledge of Studio Art.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with 3D printing/scanning and computer software is an asset. Enrolment in the MFA.SART program in F26.
