Job description

Our client, a leading financial institution in Downtown Toronto, is looking for an Interaction Designer to act as a strategic partner to product owners, business analysts, and other stakeholders to identify requirements and frame them from a user experience perspective. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with one of the Top 5 Banks in Canada.

Typical Day in Role: This designer will be working with a team to design, build, and launch a new industry-leading business banking portal for commercial banking clients. Our team’s focus is specifically on payment modernization.

Will be the embedded designer on one squad. In that role, they will work with a product owner, other designers, business analysts, and developers to design features and tools to support our payment experiences and banking portal, as well as some of the common components that enable them.

  • Excellent communication skills; facilitate collaboration sessions with stakeholders and peers.
  • Work with design researchers, visual designers, and content designers to develop well-rounded design decisions that meet user and business goals.
  • Work with the development team as a partner in delivering great experiences at the code level.
  • Use data and research to guide the design process; look for common design patterns and opportunities to enable design at scale.
  • Lateral thinking and design thinking – the ability to re-frame and solve the root client need.
  • Demonstrate strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Work with shifting priorities as we respond to client feedback and technical constraints in an agile environment.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize their own work effectively, and balance workload independently.
  • Look outside of the banking domain for inspiration and examples that drive us forward.

Must-Have Skills:

  • Deep expertise in interaction design including user flows, wireframing, and prototyping of complex digital products.
  • A systems-thinking mindset, with the ability to design holistically across interconnected experiences while considering business and technical constraints; excellent collaboration skills and stakeholder management.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in accessibility (e.g., WCAG guidelines) and how to design inclusive experiences.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in designing usable interfaces across multiple channels and platforms.
  • Experience in an applied research setting including experience integrating user research into product designs and design practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate design strategy, rationale, and logic; describing benefits and highlighting risks associated with design decisions.
  • Demonstrated expertise with design, prototyping, and research tools such as Figma, Mural, UserTesting.com.

Nice-To-Have Skills:

  • Experience working with and contributing to design systems and standardized libraries of assets, ensuring consistency and scalability across digital products.
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies and how design translates to development.
  • Financial services experience/understanding.
  • MA/MS degree or certification in Design (e.g., interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial).
  • Strong understanding of strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them during each product phase.
  • Appreciation for the potential of design thinking.
  • Experience working within a large organization and an agile environment.

Soft Skills Required:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to collaborate with other designers and cross-functional team members, ability to manage stakeholders and build relationships. Self-starter, desire to take initiative, and confidence in decision making.

Education: BA/BS degree in Design (e.g., interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science (CS), or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
