Integrated Maintenance / Mental Health Worker

PHS Community Services Society is looking for a resourceful handyperson with diverse maintenance skills to work among frontline staff supporting marginalized people.

This position is an amalgamation of two roles, Maintenance Worker and Mental Health Worker. This is because most maintenance tasks take place in residents’ rooms and common areas, and the position involves interacting with residents. PHS Maintenance Workers are fully capable of attending to electrical, plumbing, and carpentry; both in regular maintenance and emergency repair tasks.

Staff are expected to bring a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to attending to residents’ maintenance needs in both occupied and unoccupied units. The incumbent will work as a member of the PHS Maintenance Team and will be expected to redeploy and work across the PHS continuum as directed by the PHS Senior Maintenance Manager or their designate.

This is a permanent, full-time vacancy.

Responsibilities

The job includes, but is not limited to :

• Responsible for the repair and maintenance of the project when on shift, to ensure that the mandate of PHS to house those most at risk of homelessness is maintained.
• Establishes, monitors and carries out preventative maintenance for buildings, equipment and grounds. Ensures building and equipment meets safety, security and fire regulation requirements.
• Performs carpentry, electrical, painting, mechanical and plumbing maintenance and repairs such as repairing furniture, constructing shelves, installing switches, replacing plugs and other basic appliance repairs, applying paint and other finishes, repairing drywall, disassembling and reassembling equipment, replacing sinks and toilets and applying finishing material such as linoleum.
• Collects and removes garbage and recyclable materials and ensures the safe disposal of hazardous materials.
• Communicates with the management and staff team on a daily basis with regards to all concerns, events and activities of significance.
• Assists in the completion of monthly building reports.
• Applies standard purchasing procedures to acquire goods and services.
• Fosters a sense of community and provides social, emotional, and behavior management support to residents / shelter guests.
• Uses analytical abilities to observe and respond to participant / shelter guests’ needs and attempt to mitigate potential emergency situations.
• Responsible for de-escalating hostile interactions between residents / shelter guests; escalate issues to project manager as necessary.
• Responding to resident-related emergency calls when the project manager is not on site.
• Assists with basic first aid, overdose response and performing CPR when necessary.

• Demonstrates ability to work with residents / shelter guests in a manner that conveys respect.
• Strong interpersonal skills; working knowledge of conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crisis intervention techniques.
• Must bring a non-judgmental, compassionate and anti-oppressive approach to working with marginalized populations.
• Proven organizational skills and efficiency operating in a challenging, dynamic environment, ability to prioritize, work under pressure and manage tight deadlines with a varied and demanding workload.
• Respects confidentiality among residents / shelter guests.

Education and experience

We are looking for people from all walks of life. Different types of experiences are valued at PHS, including volunteer and lived experience. The ideal candidate for this role has the following qualifications and skills :

• Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or an equivalent amount of experience.
• Minimum two years’ maintenance and / or construction experience.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license preferred, with satisfactory driving record.
• Awareness of mental health and substance use issues is essential.
• Current First Aid / CPR certification is essential. Narcan and overdose management training will be provided.
• Successful applicant(s) will be required to complete a satisfactory criminal record check.

Terms of employment

Schedule : Sunday to Thursday, 9 am – 5 pm (37.5 hours / week, full-time).

This is a unionized position under CUPE 5536.
