University of British Columbia is seeking a Research Engineer - Instrumentation to design and fabricate tools, protocols, and methods for evaluating combustion and emissions of alternative fuels. The role involves collaboration with the research group and industrial partners, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

The incumbent will interact with team members and external partners, drive data-driven experiments, and document activities for reporting and archiving.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science; minimum one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create unique prototype equipment for novel engineering applications, including assessing requirements, stakeholder consultation, full-cycle design, analysis and testing, and documentation.
  • Design, fabricate, implement, and maintain instrumentation, equipment, and protocols for measuring combustion and emissions of alternative fuels and energy systems.
  • Develop and implement measurement techniques and data collection protocols using lab- or field-based approaches.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain software for instrument control and data analysis using LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Python/NumPy.
  • Oversee safe operation of the laboratory facility, equipment maintenance, procurement, and vendor coordination.
  • Support measurement campaigns, including campaign design, engine facility operation, data analysis, and preparation of reports and data archives.
  • Prepare archival research documentation such as journal articles, conference papers and presentations, seminars, and workshops.
  • Document activities and provide regular reports to the supervisor and team members.
  • Provide guidance to graduate students in developing, fabricating, operating, and maintaining lab equipment.
