Our client is an industry-leading industrial automation and combustion solutions provider is seeking an Automation Specialist to join its Combustion Management and Industrial Applications project team based in Calgary. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the successful candidate will play a key role in the full project lifecycle, supporting projects from initial system audits and front-end design through programming, testing, commissioning, and startup.
Participate in the commissioning and startup of industrial fired equipment and combustion systems.
Organize and support field installation activities for combustion-related projects.
Provide onsite and remote technical support to customers, contractors, and project teams.
Perform intermediate- and advanced-level troubleshooting of combustion, instrumentation, controls, and process systems.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with customers, contractors, and project stakeholders.
Support project teams with commissioning planning, execution, and startup activities.
Prepare detailed field commissioning reports and technical documentation for clients.
Develop and maintain commissioning binders, instrument datasheets, and instrument testing records.
Support mechanical shop activities, including piping dry fits, integrated Factory Acceptance Tests (i-FATs), and instrumentation setup and testing.
Apply and expand expertise in burner technologies, industrial combustion systems, automation, instrumentation, controls, and related mechanical equipment.
Ensure compliance with applicable industry codes and standards, including CSA B149 and Canadian Electrical Code requirements.
Install, commission, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation and control equipment, including Fisher control valves and regulators, Rosemount transmitters and switches, Micro Motion Coriolis flow meters, gas analyzers, safety shutoff valves, isolation valves, differential pressure transmitters, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, construction, and operations teams to ensure successful project execution and equipment performance.
Diploma in Engineering Technology (Instrumentation, Electrical, or a related discipline) or a recognized Journeyperson Trade Certification.
Fourth-Class Power Engineering certification or higher is considered an asset.
Class A Gasfitter certification is strongly preferred; willingness to obtain certification through professional development is desirable.
Hands-on experience operating and commissioning fired equipment, including boilers, API heaters, Once-Through Steam Generators (OTSGs), Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), and glycol heaters.
Experience with Burner Management Systems (BMS), combustion control systems, industrial automation, and process operations.
Experience working in power generation, oil and gas, industrial processing, or similar heavy industrial environments.
Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams, and electrical wiring schematics.
Strong understanding of flow dynamics, pressure systems, heat transfer principles, and process control strategies.
Knowledge of instrumentation, controls, combustion systems, and related mechanical equipment.
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
Ability to support equipment installation, commissioning, startup, maintenance, and field service activities.
Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with customers, contractors, operations personnel, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
