We have a phenomenal development opportunity for an instrumentation engineer with process plant or refinery experience at our Fort McMurray location. You will interact with production unit teams (PUTs), maintenance, and operations groups to build on existing strategies. You will also use your dedication to continuous improvement to provide detailed technical assistance for day-to-day upgrading operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • 5 years of maintenance, reliability and project experience in the energy industry
  • Knowledge of DCS, SIS, PLC, BMS, CEMS (Emission Monitoring), machine monitoring & protection systems, fire & gas detection systems, Process Analyzers, AMS and control system communication networks such as OPC, Foundation fieldbus, Modbus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards, International Society of Automation (ISA) standards and industry instrument best practices
  • Familiarity with ANSI (American National Standard Institute), NFPA, NEC, API, and IEC (international Electrotechnical commission) standards as applicable to instrumentation design and selection
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SAP
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure trouble free and sustained operation of units within PUTs
  • Provide engineering support on day-to-day instrument and control related matters. It includes, but not limited to, engineering scope of works, data collection, engineering assessments, risk review, resolution of bad actors and equipment failures
  • Proficient in the specification, selection, installation, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting of field Instrumentation, control valves and emergency shutdown valves
  • Collaborate with field E/I technicians and specialists to provide directions on equipment troubleshooting
  • Proficiency in creating engineering work packages for repairs and overhauls or for new procurements to support outages and major turnarounds
  • Proficiency in developing cause and effect diagrams, instrument datasheets, instrument installation drawings, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and P& ID markups
  • Proficiency in Functional Safety– ability to actively contribute in PHA / LOPA and translate the findings to validate existing Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs), identify, and approve new SIF’s and prepare safety requirement specifications
  • Develop asset strategies and preventative maintenance (PM) plans and monitor compliance on critical as well as regulatory instruments like S-23/GHG meters and provide monthly reports
  • Investigate failures and provide inputs in improving long-term reliability of assets within provided timelines and budgets
  • Lead simple to medium complexity Management of Change (MOCs). Support medium to high complexity changes by providing business cases / problem definitions
  • Drive reliability improvements through elimination of bad actors while continually reviewing and developing equipment strategies for Instrumentation /Analyzers/ Valves
  • Proactively identify obsolescence of instrumentation infrastructure and initiate appropriate actions
  • Continuous improvement mindset to look for opportunities to enhance reliability and reduce costs through optimized equipment strategies

Location & other Key Details

  • You will work out of our Base Plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided.
