Qualifications

  • 10+ years of Automation/Instrumentation and Controls experience.
  • Proficiency with PLC, DCS, RTU and/ or SCADA systems (ABB 800XA, Honeywell Experion/PKS, DeltaV, Allen-Bradley).
  • Strong leadership, communication skills, and ability to travel on-site.

Responsibilities

  • Lead instrumentation and controls engineering scope across projects.
  • Act as primary client contact for I&C scope and align with expectations.
  • Manage project deliverables, schedules, and resources.
  • Develop P&IDs and implement project specifications.
  • Prepare instrument data sheets and requisition quotes.

Position Overview

As an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer – Project Lead, you will play a key role in leading the design, implementation, and commissioning of instrumentation and controls systems for a wide range of industrial projects, including natural gas and oil processing facilities and infrastructure. This role combines technical expertise with project leadership, ensuring high-quality, code-compliant designs are delivered on time and within budget.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, technical environment and understands how instrumentation & controls systems fuel business performance, innovation, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leads instrumentation and controls engineering scope for a variety of different projects
  • Acts as primary client contact for I&C scope; ensure alignment with expectations
  • Manages project deliverables, schedules, and resource planning
  • Develops piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and implements project specifications
  • Provides input into instrumentation and controls deliverables throughout all project phases
  • Assists in project scheduling as well as in the development of instrumentation and controls estimates
  • Prepares instrument technical specifications, instrument data sheets and requisition quotes
  • Prepares bid evaluations for instrument & controls system hardware
  • Participates in HAZOP/SIL analysisl
  • Provides construction support, interacts with contractors and project stakeholders, answers RFI’s.
  • Assists in the commissioning and start-up of gas plants, compressor stations, pipelines and wellsites
  • Prepares controls narratives and philosophy documents as well shutdown key/cause and effect deliverables.
  • Prepares written scopes of work for instrument and controls contractors
  • Assists in FEED activities such as cost estimates, scheduling, cost of service estimates, and feasibility studies.
  • Checks and reviews vendor drawings and engineering deliverables against client specifications/industry codes and standards to ensure technical accuracy
  • Mentors Junior and Intermediate staff in the department
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation and Instrumentation or related field
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in the United States is preferred. Candidates eligible for registration with EGBC and/or U.S. PE licensure will also be considered.
  • 10+ years of solid Automation/ Instrumentation and Controls experience
  • Strong knowledge of engineering codes, standards and guidelines including ASME B31.3/B31.8, API RP 500/505, ISA, CSA C22.1/Z662, ANSI, IEC, NFPA, CENELEC
  • Proficiency with programming PLC, DCS, RTU and/or SCADA systems (ABB 800XA, Honeywell Experion/PKS, DeltaV, Allen-Bradley, etc.)
  • Proficiency with engineering software and engineering database programs (Microsoft Office, Elecdes, InTools/Smart Plant Instrumentation, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear technical direction and guidance
  • Strong leadership capabilities combined with excellent communication skills
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work on-site as required
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in oil and gas but is not mandatory

Compensation

The salary for this role is based on an average of 37.5 hours a week. The estimated range is between CAD $130,000 - $170,000 annually, depending on skills and experience.
