Job description

Faculty of Academic and Career Preparation members prepare students for success in various post-secondary programs, workplaces, and communities. They support students' growth and contribute to the Faculty's culture through energetic teaching, scholarship, and service. Faculty must be committed to inclusivity and diversity, playing a critical role in building the Faculty's capacity.

The position, developed in partnership with VIU's tiwšɛmawtxʷ (Powell River) Campus, aims to develop Trades-specific language skills and workplace cultural competencies for newcomers to Canada, facilitating access to VIU Trades and professional programs in the qathet region.

Duties:
  1. Deliver Trades Pathways curriculum both in-person and online, including collaboration with guest speakers and activities related to Trades.
  2. Support Trades Pathways students.
  3. Collaborate with the Trades Pathways Coordinator, campus staff, and Trades Faculty to support student progression into trades programs.
  4. Ensure an inclusive classroom environment for students with diverse backgrounds and learning challenges, including recent trauma experiences.
  5. Apply adult education practices and work with students from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline and relevant teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching and understanding the needs of newcomers to Canada.
  • Commitment to teaching, learning, collaboration, and student success.
  • Empathy and ability to connect with diverse students.
  • Experience in trauma-informed pedagogy.
  • Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Initiative and computer proficiency.
  • Adaptability to changing environments and program structures.
  • Innovative thinking to facilitate student progression into trades programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • TOESL certificate or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching ESL and teacher certification.
  • Familiarity with Trades programs and immigrant populations.
  • Experience with VIU systems.
