Job description

The Marine Institute (MI), a campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, is Canada's most comprehensive centre for education, training, applied research, and industrial support for ocean industries. MI offers over 20 industry-driven programs, from technical certificates to graduate degrees. It comprises three schools: the School of Ocean Technology, the School of Fisheries, and the School of Maritime Studies, each housing specialized centres and units leading in applied research and technology transfer.

The School of Ocean Technology (SOT) fosters growth in the ocean technology sector through education, training, applied research, technology transfer, and community engagement. It delivers diploma, bachelor, and graduate programs focused on ocean technologies such as vehicle technology, ocean characterization, instrumentation, and observation. SOT plays a vital role in educating highly qualified personnel and leading R&D initiatives to support industry growth, with industry support and adherence to international accreditation standards. The Center for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec), associated with SOT, collaborates with industry and other partners on technology development and application for the maritime community.

DUTIES

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching, course development, and renewal in various SOT programs. Primary responsibilities include instruction in ROV Systems and Simulator Training, and ROV Operations courses, covering classroom, laboratory, and field components, as well as student evaluation.

The ROV Systems and Simulator Training course introduces students to different types of ROVs and their essential systems. The ROV Operations course trains students in the proficient and safe operation of underwater robotic systems across subsea applications. Both courses incorporate simulator training to enhance learning outcomes.

The position may require operation, maintenance, and repair of SOT’s ROV inventory, which includes models such as Deep Trekker DTG Series and Pivot, Video Ray Scout, Outland-1000, Seabotix LBV300, SEAMOR Chinook, Saab Seaeye Falcon, and F.E.T. Navajo and Mohican (with LARS and Control Cabin). Maintenance may involve XL38 and G3 models used for lab purposes.

Additional duties may include outdoor work, water-based activities, boat operations, PPE use, and lifting objects.

Opportunities exist to lead or participate in research and projects with industry or academic partners via SOT/CTec, MI International, or collaborations with other schools. Faculty are also expected to engage in community activities integral to the institute’s mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should have 3-5 years of relevant experience and a degree in a technology-related discipline. Marine or ocean technology industry experience, especially in electronics, and prior post-secondary teaching experience are assets.

SALARY: Commensurate with Marine Institute Instructors' Collective Agreement (NAPE Local 7405)
