A healthcare provider in Alberta is seeking an Instructor/Clinical Nurse Educator to plan and facilitate educational programs for nursing staff. The role demands a qualified nurse with a Baccalaureate Degree and experience in addiction and mental health sectors. Responsibilities include collaborating with management and assessing educational needs. This position is part-time with the potential for transition to Recovery Alberta.
Opioid use is a serious problem in Alberta that requires a comprehensive, coordinated, and sustainable approach to prevent and reduce harms related to opioid dependence. The Opioid Dependency Program (ODP) provides oral medication Suboxone, Sublocade, methadone, and Kadian (SROM), and the Narcotic Transition Services (NTS) provides medications such as Hydromorphone. This Instructor/Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) position will be responsible for the planning and facilitation of education, based on adult learning principles, for nursing and other clinical staff working with ODP and NTS. This work will involve education for clinicians to increase consistency between programs and ensure that NTS aligns with the other sites provincially. The CNE will play a lead role in ensuring that clinical competencies and organizational standards/practices are well understood and applied in concurrent enhanced service delivery. This will involve close collaboration with the Manager, Assistant Head Nurse and Clinical Supervisor as well as with other supports and resources within Addiction and Mental Health (AMH) in the province. The CNE will assess staff education and professional development needs and then plan, implement and evaluate the educational activities for staff. The learning initiatives include, but are not limited to; education for orientation, mandatory education, clinical competencies and educational support for changes in policies, procedures as well as the development of practice support documents, to promote best practice competencies for staff. The CNE will participate in site and/or zone committees and working groups to plan, develop and implement new clinical guidance documents. Acting as a role model and resource to all staff for professional development and clinical competency.

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Three (3) years’ experience in providing advanced practice in the assessment, treatment and evaluation of addiction, mental health disorders or conditions, using individual or group treatment modalities. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive, trauma informed team environment. Demonstrates advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. A strong track record in establishing and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders is necessary. Effective teamwork, conflict resolution, change and resource management skills are essential, incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Advanced computer skills including experience in Connect Care, Outlook, Office. Minimum one year experience in teaching/facilitation of small or large group settings; knowledge of adult learning principles and a variety of educational delivery methods. Coaching and mentoring skills; flexible and adaptable. Involvement in developing/delivering educational programs or implementing initiatives. Expert knowledge of co-occurring health needs. Training in Suicide Risk Management.
