Job Information

As a Nursing Instructor, your main job is to plan, teach, and evaluate courses for adult students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, as well as in related programs. You'll also help review and improve these courses as needed.

You'll report to the Program Head of the BSN and Post-BSN programs. Your responsibilities will include creating and delivering high-quality courses, supporting student success, and helping students grow in their nursing careers-especially those in communities across the Northwest Territories.

You may teach in classrooms, clinical settings, or during on-the-land learning experiences. You might also work shifts while supervising students in various healthcare areas like long-term care, mental health, surgery, medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and community health.

In addition to teaching, you'll attend regular meetings, update your supervisor on how students are doing, and take on other tasks to help Aurora College reach its goals.

What You Need to Know and Be Able to Do:

  • You should have a strong understanding-both theoretical and practical-of the subject you'll be teaching.
  • You need to be able to research and update your course materials and teaching methods so that your courses stay current and relevant.
  • You should know how to teach adults, including how to design, manage, deliver, and evaluate adult education programs.
  • It's important to understand the unique educational challenges and issues that adult learners face in Northwest Territories (NWT) communities.
  • You must be familiar with the laws, policies, regulations, and standards that apply to the subject you're teaching.
  • You should have a good understanding of northern culture, cross-cultural communication, and the political context in the region.
  • You need to be able to offer basic academic advice and support students with life skills when needed.
  • It's helpful to understand how the College is organized and how it works with partners in the community, across the NWT, and possibly even at the national and international level.
  • You must have strong communication skills, both spoken and written.

To be successful in this position, you would have:

  • A Completion of a Master's Degree in Nursing, or related field such as adult education or education,
  • 3 years' experience as a Registered Nurse
  • 2 years' instructional experience in the field of Nursing in post-secondary and/or supervising student nurses
