Reporting to the Program Director, the Instructional Designer is responsible for the design, development, review, and revision of competency-based training programs for BC Corrections, Ministry of Public Safety and the Solicitor General. You help to ensure the training aligns with the strategic directions of JIBC and meets the mandated standards of BC Corrections.
This requires the consistent application of training methodologies in the creation of curriculum materials to support standards, policies, and procedures for provincial correctional officers.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing and updating competency-based curriculum for Corrections Academy programs.
- Working with subject matter experts to identify learning needs, define program/course outcomes, and determine delivery requirements and constraints.
- Applying sound instructional design and adult education principles in curriculum development, including creating learning resources, teaching activities, and evaluation instruments.
- Developing media requirements and learning materials, and editing course manuals and materials.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Master’s degree in education, adult education, or related field.
- At least 3 years’ demonstrated experience in curriculum design and development.
- Completion of one or more instructional skills or instructional design courses.
- Background in some aspects of Corrections, sheriffs, policing, or similar fields an asset.
- Ability to implement sound instructional design principles, develop instructional materials to address specific learner profiles, manage multiple projects with shifting priorities and timelines, write and edit clear instructional materials, provide coaching and training, attend to detail, and evaluate and make recommendations regarding instructional design in various modalities.
- Sound technical writing and editing skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Project management skills.
- Highly motivated, independent self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.
- Desire to develop knowledge and skills within the corrections academy and instructional design to meet the Division’s evolving needs.
- Ability to work effectively and maintain professional relations with the public, faculty, staff, and students.
- Experience designing online and blended teaching and learning environments using current technology and online tools such as Blackboard, Storyline, WordPress, Rise, Kaltura, etc.
- Experience developing and integrating simulations, applied exercises and other interactive learning approaches within face-to-face and online curriculum.

This is a term, full time (35 hours per week) position. Applicants must be within a commutable distance to JIBC's New Westminster Campus. This position may be considered for a hybrid work arrangement.
