Job summary

The Saskatchewan Food Inspection services (Food Centre) seeks a Technician-Inspector to provide inspection services across Saskatchewan. This full-time role involves certifying standards in domestic meat slaughter/processing facilities and extensive training in inspection processes.

The successful candidate will study and apply regulations, document findings, and maintain safe operations while coordinating with plants and Transportation as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Animal or Food Science or Diploma in Animal Health Technologies or equivalent.
  • Experience in slaughter facilities operations, meat inspection, and food safety.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Strong time management and written and oral communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation across the province.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willing to work varied or extended hours.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Examination of animal and carcass before and after slaughter to detect evidence of disease or abnormal conditions.
  • Observation of animal handling techniques to ensure humane handling standards.
  • Careful and complete documentation of all findings.
  • Maintain a professional working relationship with the establishment.
  • Inspect processing areas to ensure sanitary conditions are maintained.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of all applicable regulations and standards.

The Saskatchewan Food Inspection services (Food Centre) is seeking an individual to join our team to provide inspection services throughout the province of Saskatchewan. The position being staffed is full time. Inspectors are responsible for ensuring provincial standards are being met in provincially licensed (Domestic) meat slaughter and processing facilities. The successful candidate will receive extensive classroom and on the job training related to inspection processes.

Job Description
  • Examination of animal and carcass before and after slaughtering to detect evidence of disease or other abnormal conditions that may result in further actions (trim, hold or condemnation).
  • Observation of animal handling techniques to ensure compliance with humane handling standards.
  • Careful and complete documentation of all findings.
  • Maintain a professional working relationship with the establishment.
  • Inspect processing areas to ensure sanitary conditions are maintained.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of all applicable regulations and standards.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment by abiding by all Occupational Health and Safety Policies and reporting hazards where observed.
Critical Skills and Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree with a specialization in Animal or Food Science, OR a Diploma in Animal Health Technologies, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the operations of slaughter facilities, meat inspection, and food safety.
  • Excellent organizational skills and computer proficiency (Microsoft Office).
  • Good time management and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and be able to provide own transportation to various locations in the province.
  • Must have the ability to stand for long periods of time and able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be willing to work varied or extended hours as required.
