Job summary

A reputable construction firm in Toronto is seeking a Construction Safety Officer to ensure compliance and safety on-site. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of relevant experience in railway safety and infrastructure projects and a diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety. Responsibilities include conducting safety inspections, supporting project teams, and promoting a strong safety culture. This is a full-time role based on-site.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in railway safety, infrastructure, and heavy civil projects.
  • Recognized certification such as CRSP, CHSC, GSC, CSC, or NSO.

Description

  • Internal Title: Construction Safety Officer

Perform construction assurance and compliance activities on the assigned projects.

Support project teams to develop safe work procedures and implement them effectively for the safe execution of work.

Perform formal inspections and audits to ensure compliance with relevant OHS legislation, standards, and contract requirements.

Provide day-to-day oversight for on-site construction work conducted by contractors to assess compliance against relevant OHSA legislation and contract requirements, support hazard identification, and implement risk mitigation controls.

Review site activities and support the protection of workers as well as public infrastructure and operations.

Engage, coordinate, and work with the integrated project team and internal/external stakeholders to provide consistent support, review, analyze, and outline construction activities and work areas to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

Participate in and/or support incident investigations, including follow-up actions to ensure corrective measures are implemented.

Assist the Safety Director and Safety team with other tasks as required.

Provide construction safety assurance by reviewing and assessing contractors' safety plans and safe work method submissions, and inspecting construction sites.

Liaise with and offer expertise to the Safety Manager, Construction Manager, and team on construction safety matters.

Assist in developing safety training materials and presentations.

Interpret the health and safety requirements of the project and make recommendations to managers.

Facilitate safety training sessions.

Engage in site safety observations and audits.

Establish a strong safety culture on-site, promote accident prevention techniques, and ensure compliance with policies.

Participate in injury investigations, reporting, and follow-up.

Support Ministry of Labor (MOL) site visits and incident investigations.

Research, compile, and review safety policies, regulations, and industry practices to address safety issues and omissions.

Evaluate document reviews with a focus on safety.

Complete tasks assigned by the Construction Safety Manager efficiently and timely.

Skills and Competencies: Strong understanding of OH&S Act and construction regulations, ability to prioritize, detail-oriented, problem-solving skills, effective communication, and advanced Microsoft Office skills.
