The Information Systems Administrator Position

Our new Information Systems Administrator will possess strong professional technical and interpersonal skills and will perform maintenance and administration for City's computer and communication networks, including virtual servers, private and public cloud systems, Windows desktop and server operating systems, network, communications, hardware, software systems, audio/video and broadcast systems. This position is responsible for providing a broad range of systems administration technical duties and delivering excellent customer service while providing end user support. Highly desirable candidates may include the certifications: ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), or CompTIA certifications such as A+, CiSA+, Network+, PenTest+, Project+ or Security +.

The Information Systems Administrator Position

Our new Information Systems Administrator will possess strong professional technical and interpersonal skills and will perform maintenance and administration for City's computer and communication networks, including virtual servers, private and public cloud systems, Windows desktop and server operating systems, network, communications, hardware, software systems, audio/video and broadcast systems. This position is responsible for providing a broad range of systems administration technical duties and delivering excellent customer service while providing end user support. Highly desirable candidates may include the certifications: ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), or CompTIA certifications such as A+, CiSA+, Network+, PenTest+, Project+ or Security +.

This position is overtime exempt and receives direction from assigned lead supervisor and department head or a division head designee; may exercise lead worker supervision over technical or clerical staff, administer contracts, and monitor performance.

Essential Functions
  • Install, configure, test, upgrade, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot personal computers, computer components, software, and peripheral devices; maintain, install, and upgrade file servers and other network hardware.
  • Troubleshoot system hardware, software, and operating system issues, identify root causes.
  • Perform network administration functions including maintaining end user accounts and passwords, installing, upgrading, and maintaining software on servers, upgrading server hardware, and troubleshooting and resolving network connectivity issues.
  • Manage end user help desk requests; may prioritize tickets.
  • Install workstation computers, software, and hardware at assigned locations, ensure that all equipment and applications are functioning properly, and perform computer migration, backup, and recovery in physical and virtual environments.
  • Provide e-mail system administration and maintenance.
  • Perform monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance for network infrastructure, including wireless communications.
  • Ensure system security and integrity including various level of systems administration and management of user groups and accounts.
  • Assist with maintenance of assigned telephone system and other communication device systems.
  • Install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain data and telephone cable infrastructure and other cable systems.
  • Participate in the development of technical documentation and systems operating instructions for end users.
  • Assist with training City staff in the procedures, methods, and equipment used in information systems technology.
  • May participate in the development of the City annual budget.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of information systems and make recommendations regarding system, hardware, software, and peripheral purchases.
  • Prioritize and coordinate work assignments.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Experience, Training, License/Certificate, Working Conditions

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Equivalent to three years of increasingly responsible information systems related work experience operating, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining personal computers and assisting with Local Area Network management.

Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in information systems, computer science, or a closely related field. One year of the education requirement may be substituted with two years of responsible information systems technician work experience.

License or Certificate: Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid California driver's license. Possession of information services industry recognized certifications are desirable, especially ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner.

Environmental Conditions: Office and server room environment; exposure to computer screens.

Physical Conditions: Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time; travel to various locations; operating motorized vehicles; light to medium lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling; climbing; balancing; stooping; kneeling; crouching; crawling; reaching; handling; use of fingers; talking; hearing; near and far acuity; depth perception; exposure to vibration, confined work space, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
